I am an extremely light sleeper and have tried the regular Sound Screen/Sleep Mate model. But this model (Marpac 1288A) can be cranked up to cover just about everything, from noisy apartment neighbors to restless cats yowling at your bedroom door. It can also provide soothing background nature sounds for the daytime. I sleep like a rock with it and take it with me on trips. It is a bit bulky but very light. If you are not interested in the overlay sound feature (birds chirping and frogs etc), try the cheaper model DS-600A.

Our new top of the line model #1288A features the ultimate in sound conditioning. Choose from eight different "base" sounds then mix any combination of eight "overlay" sounds to customize your personal sound environment. You can easily choose from the base lake sound and overlay with shore birds. It is so easy to create your own special sound sanctuary. Includes auxiliary jack, touch and slide controls, optional timer, and detachable power supply. The Marsona DS-600A is the definitive collection of our customer's most requested, favorite sounds: Lake Shore, Surf, Country Eve, White Sound, Thunderstorm, and Brook. Choose only one sound at a time. Set on a timer or on continuous sound mode. The Sleepmate Model 980 (Dual Speed) and 580A(Single Speed) machines are white noise machines. They are ideal for those persons needing to sleep at odd hours, babies, and wherever outside noise is a distraction. The 980A offers a greater range of tone and volume than the single speed 580A.
