Now that I have been using Soap Nuts for about a year, I wanted to write a review of my experience so far. I am hooked and will never go back!
I have a family of four and we try and do what we can to stay as 'natural' and 'green' as possible. Switching to Maggies Soap Nuts made me want to do more. I have since cut out fabric softeners entirely and cut down on machine drying. I found that a cup of white vinegar in the rinse cycle gets rid of any static cling. For a nice and natural fragrance, I use essential oils from Amazon (Edens Garden) when I use the machine dryer and I am having a blast mixing my own fragrances! And of course, Mother Nature provides a clean fragrance when using my folding outdoor drying rack I purchased recently from Amazon (Household Essentials P1900 3-Arm Portable Umbrella Clothing Dryer).
I have tried another brand of soap nuts that seemed to be very popular and I have to say I was surprisingly disappointed. They seemed to have all the saponin sucked out of them before they were packaged, so I am back to Maggies Soap Nuts for good this time.

My husband and I recently took a 14-day adventure tour through the country of Nicaragua. We scaled volcanoes, waded through muck, kayaked and swam, and rode on some lovely (but smelly) horses. Each night we washed our clothes by hand in whatever sink/tub was available with the soap nuts we had brought, and every morning they smelled and looked as fresh as if we had first stepped off the plane. Amazing! I can't tell you how pleased we were with the results. In addition, my husband is a marathoner and regularly runs 6-20 miles a day. This is the ONLY detergeant that gets the inevitable funk smell out of his clothing after a long run. Plus, we only wash our clothes in cold water now because we don't need to use the hot water for heavy stains/smells. Long story short - this product WORKS. I was having an issue with build up and mold around my front load washer. Upon researching this issue, I found it was a known issue with front load washers especially when you used commercial soaps. Several individuals eliminated this issue by switching to natural soap. So I tried Maggie's Soap Nuts and now I am hooked. Not only has my front load washer issues disappeared but with the soap nuts I do not have to use a fabric softener and my clothes are softer and seem cleaner. It may take a washing or two to get all the build up out of your clothes but you will notice a difference. I have given some soap nuts in a pouch to friends, especially one with a small child who was getting rashes, my friends are hooked as well. Like many, I was skeptical about the cleaning power of these little soap nuts. When I received the package, I wondered what in the world I had gotten into. But I tried them and was pleasantly surprised when my wash came out clean!! I do put Borax in my wash (always have) so I'm sure that helped a little. I like this product so much, though, that I have recommended it to many friends (who all think I'm nuts.. soap nuts!) It will not leave your wash smelling like flowers or some meadow after it's rained (though I don't think that detergents ever smelled like what they said they would), however, a few drops of essential oils on a reusable dryer sheet takes care of that! I've been using Maggie's Soap Nuts almost exclusively (except for the cloth diapers, which I use Charlie's) for over 2 years now and I couldn't be happier. I do a lot of laundry: there are 5 of us in the family. The soap nuts clean well, smell great, and last a long time (I usually toss a new nut into the bag with the crumbs of old nuts, and occasionally dump the bag when it gets full of dried-out crumbs). I love how the clothes are so soft! I recommend these to anyone who is willing to give them a try. Once you try it out for a week, you'll find it works great!
