Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Mr. Bar-B-Q Cast-Iron WokCustomer Review: Excellent Cast iron with so many uses. Summary: 5 Stars
I own a LOT of cast iron. Been using it for years and have Wagner pots as well as Lodge along with some non-marked pots/pans. I cook 99% of the meals [[daily for self and wife]] using cast iron pans and utensils. Wife also has a lot she uses for camping and Historical re-enactments. So I know my Iron.
The Wok is excellent. Took a beautiful season on the first run. I had to retouch the inside bottom but an hour in the fire fixed that. It has become my favorite pot to use whether it is stir fry, fried potatoes, chicken or even stew and used almost daily-Nice size to store in the oven when not being used.
It is not near as heavy seeming as my Wagner/Lodge but it has a good 'feel' to the metal as well as 'sound' so it is definitely not pot metal or cheap cast. Nice, smooth surface and once season slick as Teflon and no mold marks or anything else to mar the surface.
Chances are I will buy one or two more-one for our camping and one in my Jeep just in case I get stuck out in the middle of nowhere on a photography expedition.
Customer Review: heavy and worth it Summary: 5 Stars
I know it's a bit of trouble to use this wok. It is heavy, after all, it's cast iron. Le Creuset and other cookware have a similar construction except they are enameled. You get the same performance and possibility better since the wok becomes more stick-resistant as you go. The downside is the weight. Also, don't crack it by getting it wet when hot.
The advantages are many. It is truly unstoppable. We really enjoy stir fried vegetables cooked with as much heat as our gas stove can put out. The high temperature flavor is called 'wok hay' and is only attained at high temperature. We killed a Calphalon wok's non-stick after a year cooking too high. I wouldn't be this hard on my Le Creuset for fear of harming the finish, either.
If you take care of this wok, it will provide you with many years of use and unparalleled performance. The breaking in process is not that bad. A little bit of frying goes a long way. Just keep water from sitting in it and use soap sparingly. Once the coating has built up, it requires less care than other cookware.
Customer Review: Cash Iron Wok Summary: 5 Stars
This wok was all I hoped it would be and more. It can be heated to a very high temp without damage. At such temperatures, dinner can be cooked in about 10 minutes or less. It makes the electric wok I used to have seem like a child's toy. It arrived in great condition, but then, it's cast iron--how could it do anything else? My daughter has already indicated that she wants one of her own when she moves out to go to college. I am very happy with this product and cannot say enough good about it. I can cut my vegetables, marinate my meat or tofu, and store in covered dishes in the 'fridge until I get home from work. When I come home, I turn on the fire under the wok, change clothes, then get the pre-cut food out and start cooking. 10 minutes later, a tasty dinner is on the table! I wish I had bought this years ago! I clean it after it gets cool with soap and water-no dishwasher, dry it, then lightly oil it and store it in the oven. Can use steel wool if needed. Easy, easy!
Customer Review: Heavy but love it! Summary: 5 Stars
After reading the reviews, I was a bit nervous about buying this wok due to the negative comments. I eventually decided against buying the $50+ wok and went with this one. I received and used my wok on yesterday. The wok is heavy, but it does a GREAT job. It's worth the weight (no pun intended--hahaha). I was a bit concerned when going through the initial cleaning and seasoning process, thinking that I was not getting the gunk off. When oiling it (I rubbed the oil in with a white paper towel), the paper towel turned black. I rewashed the wok twice and the paper towel would still be black. I finally decided to proceed and put it in the oven for an hour as recommended in the instructions. There was a weird smell, but I figured it was the rest if the gunk burning off. After all was said and done, I cooked in it, the food was GREAT, and when I rinsed the wok out and reseasoned it, there was no black stuff. Good wok, good price, and highly recommended.
Customer Review: Great cast iron wok Summary: 5 Stars
I've had this for over a year and really enjoy using it. It arrived without any padding but it did not crack like other reviewers mentioned. I use it frequently and it gives a great flavor to food. It's the closest to getting that Chinese restaurant taste at home. You season, clean and take care of it like any other cast iron cookware. Using the stainless wok chuan with it seemed to make it smoother inside also. It's pretty non stick when well seasoned. I scrub it with a stainless steel scrubber and rinse with very hot water then dry and place back on stove to heat with a little bit of oil. Occasionally I may use a little soap to clean it if it seems really greasy since I don't want it to go rancid before I use it next. I just reheat and oil it on the stove top for a while. It stays nice and seasoned without have to put it in the oven for an hour. It is heavy but not as heavy as the Lodge one so it's much easier for me to use.
