Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Mr. Bar-B-Q Cast-Iron WokCustomer Review: Solid Product...with a helpful warning Summary: 4 Stars
If you like to make your own stir fry, and you don't mind doing a little cleaning up afterwards, this wok will be a welcomed addition to your kitchen. The heat retention of cast iron allows it to create a "seared" flavor that steel won't produce on a typical gas oven. It's heavy (like all cast-iron cookware) but the inconvenience one might experience from the weight is far outweighed by its ability to create flavorful dishes.
My only gripe about the product is best phrased as a warning - don't skimp when scrubbing off the "protective coating" before you season this wok! I thought I had scoured it all off but, after the initial seasoning, the first dish I cooked tasted like a science experiment (with a nauseating chemical flavor that beggars description). After a LOT more scrubbing and re-seasoning, its performing as I had hoped.
For almost making me retch after using it the first time, I deduct one star. Otherwise, this is an excellently constructed, rock-solid addition to any cooks kitchen...and at a price like this, it's a steal.
Customer Review: Great wok Summary: 4 Stars
I read all the warnings about broken woks, but I ordered anyway. Sure enough, it arrived at my door in two big pieces. However, Amazon is run the way you wish all companies were run. In less than 15 minutes I had the thing boxed up and labeled for a free trip back to Amazon. By the end of the week, I had my new wok, in one piece. That's service!
I had a devil of a time getting the factory coating off the thing. I ended up burning the heck out it in my outdoor BBQ. I highly recommend that method btw. Then I washed it thoroughly, and boiled water in it to really clean it up. Now it's on it's way to being well-seasoned.
This thing is a really big chunk of cast iron and it gets HOT, which is great for stir-frying. I'd give it a five, except that it's not perfectly round on the bottom, though it's very close. But for the price, I'm very happy with it.
Customer Review: Nice wok, bad packaging Summary: 4 Stars
First wok arrived broken into 3 pieces. This is actually the second cast iron object that UPS managed to shatter into pieces on me, the first being a subwoofer with a cast iron basket. You know how Amazon always totally overdoes it on the packaging, with a box 3 times bigger than the item and stuffed full of air bags? Well, these woks seem to have been packaged by a kid.. the wok is thrown into a box barely big enough for it, atop of some crumpled paper. I dont get it.
Second wok arrived packed the same way, but not broken. Seasoned well, cooked well. Only used it once but it seems really nice. Bottom is flat for stability but curved inside so holds heat nicely. You will definitely want a big flame for this, I am using the Bayou Classic propane burner I bought on Amazon a year ago. So for the money, this is a really great wok, just dont be surprised if it arrives broken.
Customer Review: Cast Iron cooking at a great price Summary: 4 Stars
I received this as a gift and have already put it to use several times. If you are looking for a heavy weight wok, than this is the one. I have an electric range and it sets nicely on the burner and I've found that if I leave it to heat up for about 5 minutes before adding anything in it does really well at maintaining its heat. I do recommend seasoning it before using it the first time. I wiped mine down with regular Crisco and set it in a warm oven (250-300 degrees) for about an hour. After cooking that first time I did season it once more just to get the cast iron broken in a bit quicker. My favorite recipe is Chicken Stir-fry and if you're interested in it please check out my guide for it along with some other items that go great with this product.
Customer Review: Great, but re-season it. Summary: 4 Stars
This is a fantastic wok. It has a round bottom on the inside and a flat bottom on the outside so it fits on a flattop stove with no problems. It's the closest your gonna get to a traditional thin-steel wok on this kind of stove. HOWEVER, the fist time I heated this thing up it emitted some seriously noxious fumes. A the *least* you need to throughly wash the thing (with soap) before you use it. A better option would be to totally re-season it. The factory seasoning can be removed by running it through your oven's self-cleaning cycle. This will turn the existing seasoning to ash which you can easily wash off.
