Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of MIU France CanDo Safety Can Opener

Customer Review: WOW! What else can I say? BUY IT!
Summary: 5 Stars

There are other similar products of this type and I've not tried them, but I've owned and used MANY manual and electric canopeners in my time This is HANDS DOWN THE BEST I've used of any type. I also reccommend it over the opener "top rated" by America's Test Kitchen. (they didn't include one of this type as I recall). This is worthy of comment as I normally agree with them in almost all items.

This opener is almost MIRACULOUS in its function. I have owned this for some time, but really don't cook much from cans. For this reason I can't speak to its reliability. However based on my use over the last year I'd say the following:

* It is ULTRASAFE! Uses NO cutting parts nor does it leave any sharp edges on the can.. instead it pinches the can lip to seperate the can's sealing seam.
* Works on ALL SIZES of cans from tiny to huge. Edit note: I have found one type of can that it won't open.. not that you may want to do it often, but it won't open an aluminum "cola type can" because the "step out" at the edge is too close to grip it.. don't ask why I wanted to open one ;)
* It is remarkably simple, sturdy and lightweight
* Requres almost no pressure to either attach or to turn. Even folk with weak grips should be able to use this. Its so easy you think it isn't working.
* It is very compact for a manual canopener.. fits neatly in a drawer
* The lid can be replaced on the can for those cases where you didn't use it all.. It doesn't seal, but now a plastic cover is very functional.
* I think its actually "attractive" in its own way.. far more aesthetic than any other canopener I've seen.

A negative is that it doesn't flip for "left handed" use. I say this for those who are so impaired :)

The other issue is that there is no warranty info with it, though it is warranteed. The MIUFrance web site contacts page offers an email contact for support. They offer MANY products, but no specific warranty page for this item. I expect it is a replacement policy. I have no idea if charges would be involved.

There is also support offered via admin@ email link on the kitchenbasics web site. There was a "parts" warranty link, but it isn't functional. That doesn't speak very well of that site's product support.

I will confess that I threw away the packaging and the first time I went to use it, it took me a few seconds to figure out how it goes on the can (the steel "U" bar rests on top of the can)

All in all a great product. Definitely recommended from my view, and the 4 for 3 offer is nice too.

Customer Review: MIU CanDo Can Opener
Summary: 5 Stars

Our trusty ol' Pampered Chef opener gave up the ghost after many years of service. In searching Amazon for a replacement, the CanDo caught my eye, mostly with the size and shape of the twist (rotary) handle. The price was a plus.
When we got it, the mechanics of it were easy to understand -- just place the serrated (drive) cog on the rim of the can, hold on to the straight handle and turn the twist handle. Unlock the opener from the lid after it is cut simply by rotating the twist handle back a partial turn. The mechanical advantage of the rotary handle makes opening cans a snap, even with an arthritic thumb.
The construction of the opener is simple and strong which means it should be a reliable kitchen tool for quite some time. Given the price, that represents good value for money. It's also compact enough (smaller than the one it replaced) to fit into the clutter of the tool drawer without displacing other gadgets. This is a recommended buy!

Customer Review: very pleased
Summary: 5 Stars

I am very very pleased with this can opener. I was skeptical at first, but I have not been happy with electric can openers previously owned or old fashioned "manual openers". This really is an effortless can opener. So much so that I really question whether it is opening the can or not. It also leaves such a nice edge - not sharp PLUS the container or can is "recappable". It is an amazing opener with a life time guarantee. I wasn't fond of paying $6.00 for shipping on a $9.99 opener, but in the long run it was definetely worth it. I will never waste my money on another electric or manual opener. I have also owned the "battery operated" opener and it was the biggest waste of $20 I have ever spent. I would recommend this product to everyone.

Customer Review: What a manual can opener SHOULD be!
Summary: 5 Stars

Like many others who have written reviews here, I struggled with and was frustrated by cheap, ineffective manual can openers for years. I wondered, "Why can't someone design a good opener?" Well, this can opener not only operates flawlessly and easily, it is also inexpensive. That is not just good--it's great!
Because it cuts from the side (not the top), it takes a little practice to mount it correctly and to remove the can top once the cut has been completed. A hint for removal: once you have completed the cut, rotate the handle in reverse one-quarter turn. The opener will pop off the can.

Customer Review: Best can opener
Summary: 5 Stars

I have had numerous can openers including the Oxo that is supposed to leave safe edges and a KitchenAid standard opener. They were horrible, got dull quickly. The Oxo was hard to use and needed several laps around the can. AFter reading all the reviews on amazon, we ordered the MIU Can-do, and I've been using it for two days. I love this can opener! I've owned several different types, and this is by far the best. It does not leave a sharp edge, it's easy to attach, it's easy to turn, and it's cheap! What more could you ask for? We are going to order another for our food storage.
