Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of MIU Flexible Cutting Board, Set of 5Customer Review: Innovative cutting boards Summary: 5 Stars
I am so pleased with the flexible cutting boards. Gave them as gifts to each of my daughters. Great idea!!
Customer Review: Perfectly acceptable Summary: 4 Stars
These do pretty much exactly what I need them to do. They're cheap, thin cutting boards that protect my knife blades and keep the food off the counter. They also have decent size to them so they can hold, say, an entire onion + a bell pepper post chopping without crowding.
I bought mine off [...] since I had a gift certificate, but I see they are cheaper here, and I have no doubt they are the same thing.
After reading other reviews:
Yeah, they do start to get scratched up pretty quickly, but I don't think there's a big risk of cutting all the way through them soon. Getting scratches isn't entirely a bad thing actually...it means they are yielding to my knife rather than dulling the blade, which for expensive knives is a good thing.
Also, I am not sure why people are having issues with them curling. I have run mine through the dishwasher 4-5 times now, no problems, and yes, I use the full hot drying cycle. Of course it may help that I store them behind the microwave so except for when they are being used or washed, they are being constantly pressed flat. Anyway, I have had no issues with this.
As for them being super flexible so you can funnel food...that's debatable. They certainly can fold up a bit, but not quite like a rubber mat or anything nearly as controllable as that. Of course as I said, mine stay flat...really you can't expect both. Probably best to categorize it as "more flexible than a rigid one".
Customer Review: I'd buy them again (and I'll have to) Summary: 4 Stars
This is not a miracle product, but it'll do. For light applications I always remember to grab one (before I'd resist using the wood board and would sometimes use the corner of my sink, which was no good for the sink or the knives), and for heavier stuff I put one over a wood cutting board to protect it and keep it clean. If I chop chicken and veggies, I can move one to the sink (with the stuff still on it) and grab another.
I mangled one chopping ribs with a meat cleaver, and another got warped in the dishwasher (though it survived several prior washes). I'm not sure what these are made of, but they aren't that 600 degree silicon stuff, and shouldn't be treated as such (the one I mangled was already warped on the corner from a hot pan).
That said, they are cheap, and several months after I bought them my sink, counter tops, and wood cutting boards are showing no wear. That's worth buying a set of these every year or so.
Customer Review: Great, but think of them as disposable Summary: 4 Stars
I use one of these on top of a heavy synthetic or wooden cutting board when I wanted to avoid cross contamination when working with the likes of raw meats or seafood. I order two or three sets of these at a time, and with heavy use, I find they last about six months or so. A regular home cook could probably keep them for a year or more with frequent use.
They really can't go into a dishwasher; instead fill your sink with warm, soapy water and a small dash of bleach. These do not last over the long term, and very sharp knives will cut through them eventually. They're way too thin to use on a countertop, if you ask me. However, they're very useful for using atop another cutting board to keep it clean/free of bacteria.
Customer Review: What's for dinner? Summary: 4 Stars
These cutting boards, with the three different colors to prevent cross-contamination of food, are terrific. Having worked as a cook in health facilities, I am familiar with the problems of food poisoning and how easily it is spread. These cutting boards really help to reduce the dangers of that in my home kitchen. Their flexibility makes them easy to store when they are not in use and they are easy to wash and care for. I wouldn't want to be without them!
