Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Lello 4090 Gelato Pro Quart Ice Cream MakerCustomer Review: very nice machine with only a couple of issues Summary: 4 Stars
Overall, this is a great machine. I like it better than the "frozen bowl" style of ice cream maker I was using before. It does take a bit longer to make the ice cream than the other one did, but it's less complicated. There is no freeze-bowl to be stored in the freezer, and if I want to make a second batch I just make it.
The consistancy is a bit dense, since it does not do as much vertical churning of the ice cream as some other models do. But I like a dense ice cream better than one that is all air, so that doesn't bother me. Even using items like chocolate chips, it does mix the ice cream uniformly, so no worries there.
So what don't I like about it? I don't really like the timer. It's a little bit fiddly and not especially useful. I don't like the tiny little port for adding ingredients to the ice cream. In fact, I never use it. I add all ingredients first (which was a no-no with the bowl-type ice cream maker). And I don't like that the churning paddle is hollow. It's impossible to clean out, so try not to spill anything in there.
Also, it's heavy. I took it over to my parent's house one time, and that was a bad idea. It's not really a portable device.
But it makes ice cream, and does it with less fuss overall than my freeze-bowl machine did. The ice cream is also ready to eat right out of the machine (if you dish it out it quickly and like it soft). Further freezing was necessary for the old machine, but it's only optional for this one.
Customer Review: Amazing Ice Cream and Sorbet with Incredible Ease Summary: 4 Stars
I decided on the Lello 4090 2 quart model after reading reviews of self-refrigerating counter-top ice cream makers. The machine arrived on Friday. It's now Tuesday and I have churned five batches of ice cream, frozen custard and sorbet. It's all good. In fact, the frozen desserts are incredible. The instruction booklet is easy to follow and the recipes are a piece of cake (make that a bowl of ice cream).
Complaints. I wish the timer was louder and the motor turned itself off at the designated time. I knew this limitation going in. As long as you're diligent with the time, it's not a problem. Also, the machine is loud. Then again, it has a compressor and a motor. It's to be expected.
Pros. The operation is easy as can be. Two buttons. On/Off and Time. The removable barrel is simple to remove and clean. It's so convenient and easy.
It's early in my experience. But, first impressions are important. My first impression is terrific.
Customer Review: No mess ice cream Summary: 4 Stars
With room temperature ingredients, it takes about 45 minutes to make ice cream or Italian Ice. Small crumbled cookies or candy bits of reeses pieces, rollos etc can be added through the port for adding such ben and jerry ingredients. The bits are distributed evenly throughout the finished product when they are added near the conclusion of the of the process.
It would be nice if the machine had a variable speed beater to control the air in the final product, but that is probably expecting too much from a machine designed for home use.
The machine seems to be very well made and arrived well before promised delivery date.
Customer Review: Pretty Good Machine Summary: 4 Stars
I've had my Lello for a few years and overall, it's a very good machine. I do find however, that I get a better result if I pre-freeze the container even though this machine is self-refrigerated.
Pros: dependable, have not had any mechanical problems with it; has a good speed for mixing, not too fast or slow; easy to clean
Cons: timer is a little funky, beeps at the set time but does not stop churning; slot for mix-ins is small; refrigerator is ok but you get a better result if you pre-freeze the bucket
Minor issues: kind of noisy; it's also heavy
Customer Review: You get what you pay for Summary: 4 Stars
Overall, I am very happy with the purchase. This guy is HEAVY and takes an hour to make ice cream. However, when it is done, the product is wonderful.
So there are 3 types of ice cream makers:
1) old fashioned - messy & a pain
2) freezable container - does not freeze ice cream fully but low price
3) this one - heavy but makes great product
Would I purchase this unit again if required? Yes. It makes a great product (as I would expect from something this price)
