Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Lello 4070 Gelato JuniorCustomer Review: Don't worry, eat Ice Cream Summary: 5 Stars
Having read almost all the reviews, let me break it down this way...yes, it's a great machine!
It's heavy...no kidding. It has the same parts a small air conditioner will have so why does that shock people?
It doesn't shut off on it's own...so? Go but a $500 machine if you want every option. You don't get a Lexus for $10,000 new do you?
It's noisy...actually no. I'd put the noise level at no more than my old freezer bowl type, which is much less than most of my other appliances.
It doesn't freeze the ice cream solid. No, it's not designed to. ANY ice cream book will tell you that the machines only freeze to soft-serve state and that you have to put the mix into a container and into a below-zero temp freezer. It's called tempering. Do you get upset at the oven when you find that it hasn't actually frosted your cake also?
People, this is a DARN fine machine at a DARN fine price and seems to be built rock-solid. Some of the parts appear to be Oster but that'a s plus for me since I've had Oster appliances that it took me years and years to kill.
Don't keep hesitating...if you want it order it and be happy!
Customer Review: This is one cool puppy Summary: 5 Stars
If all you need to make at a time is one quart, then this unit has no drawbacks. You couldn't make it simpler to use or to cleanup. So far I've made ice cream, frozen yogurt, and chocolate pudding with picture perfect results. If you are diet-conscious, look up recipes using soy milk or tofu (I know how it sounds, but don't knock it til u've tried it- I don't like soy milk or tofu either, but the desserts are excellent).
One thing to note if you buy this unit is this: when I made my first batch, the churn stopped every few seconds and I'd have to push down to re-engage. After a minute of this the problem dawned on me. The bail on the container was resting in the wrong direction and was preventing good contact. Easy solution: flip the bail. So remember to properly position the bail and no problems.
P.s. Anybody else get a good chuckle from the reviewer who complained that she had to further chill her ice cream in the freezer after churning to make it hard? Here's a suggestion: just leave it in the unit until the safety mechanism stops the churn and let it get hard from risidual cooling. Then you can have the pleasure of chisiling it off the paddle.
Customer Review: Dee-lish! Summary: 5 Stars
I did quite a bit of research before arriving at the Lello Gelato (formerly Gelato Jr.). This little workhorse stacks up to machines that sell for twice the price elsewhere! And Amazon had it cheaper (with Amazon Prime free shipping!) that anywhere else online. Regarding its performance, it does all it claims to do. The motor was improved in this 4070 model to include an auto-shutoff mechanism if the mixture freezes solid, so the motor doesn't burn out. The only technical issue is that the lid is attached to the motor, and you have to wipe off any splatters with a damp cloth after use. The lid remains clean, however, if you just remember not to overfill the freezing chamber, as the mixture will aerate and increase in volume during freezing. For you beginners: if the ice cream/yougurt/etc. doesn't come out well, it's not the machine's fault--you just need to keep tweaking the recipe until you get the right flavor and consistency! [...] has great, hard-to-find, safe-to-eat food additives to help you with this if you're interested in exploring the "molecular gastronomy" side of frozen treats!
Happy experimenting! :D
Customer Review: Great value for an ice cream maker. Summary: 5 Stars
The Lello 4070 Junior is a great little ice cream maker for the great price of less than $170 from Amazon. I have always wanted an refrigerated ice cream maker but didn't want to pay $400 for one. We bought two, one for us and one for a gift. One was defective, but Amazon took care of it immediately, we got a replacement in 3 days. The Lello works great and we make ice cream now any time it suits us. The machine is easy to use and makes a quart of ice cream in a half an hour. You don't need to freeze a container or use ice and salt as the other machines that cost almost half as much. I mean how does it feel to save eighty bucks to have a mess in you kitchen? If you love ice cream, this is the machine to get. Plug it in, put in your ingredients, push a button and thirty minutes later you get ice cream. The machine comes with a recipe book, but one can improvise and do what ever one wants. We have developed a "Butterfingers" candy bar recipe that is just fabulous. You can do anything you want with this machine. It works great and the price is right. Give it five stars for best value and ease of use. Thank you, Amazon.
Customer Review: Works great! Summary: 5 Stars
I've had mine for just about a year and it's given us no problems. It does a great job with small batches which is a problem a lot of the machines seem to have. Unless I'm having lots of folks over I'd rather make small batches more often and have it fresh - isn't that the point? But you can definitely make multiple quart batches pretty fast if you really have to.
Since it's not relying on frozen stuff you don't have to be super concerned about adding something that's a bit warm or has too much vanilla in it (the little bit of alcohol in vanilla makes it a bit harder to freeze - I had trouble with some cheap machines because of that). You can pretty much dump any random juice or even a can of soda in it and just see what happens. If it isn't as great as you hoped it's no big deal to just add a bit of sugar or try some other idea entirely and try again right away since it doesn't have to refreeze. If you like to experiment it's a lot of fun!
I do remember the first few times that getting everything seated properly was a bit confusing but it's a complete non-issue at this point.
