Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Leifheit Leifheit Pro Pro-Line Apple CorerCustomer Review: Very sturdy, 12 slices, but harder to push Summary: 3 StarsWe've been using a plastic Oxo corer/slicer for years. It is getting cracked so I bought this one a while back.
What I like about this one:
1. The cast metal frame and handles seem indestructible.
2. It cuts an apple into 12 slices instead of 8. That's good if you have small kids, serve people with missing teeth, or just want to stretch that apple a bit with people who think more slices means more apple.
What I don't like:
1. Blade design: The way the radial blades are attached to the core blade leaves a blunt edge just above the core cutting edge, which seems to require too much downward force. (The radial blades are bent into a U shape and passed through slots in the core blade. So the bottom of the U is the blunt edge and it is on the interior of the core cutting blade.)
This blunt edge is also a collection point for apple pulp, and if it's not cleaned off right away it sometimes won't even come off in the dishwasher so I scrub it off with an old toothbrush.
This is contrasted to the Oxo on which the radial and core blades are spot welded and then sharpened as one, so there is no blunt edge. The Oxo blade is also taller, so it looks sturdier, but I don't know if there are any performance implications of blade height in terms of friction or wedging power.
2. Core diameter: I use this primarily for Honeycrisp and Pink Lady apples. I don't know how the diameter of these apples compares to other varieties, but I frequently find that the woody core material or even seeds are on the outside of the core blade. The Oxo has a slightly larger core blade diameter by just 1 or 2mm so this is less problematic.
Bottom line, I would give five stars to a slicer with the Oxo blade design and this one's blade spacing, outer handle and frame.
