Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Kyocera Ceramic Fine Mill, Black Top

Customer Review: Good for Flaxseed
Summary: 5 Stars

I use this mill for flaxseed. It does a good job of grinding the flaxseed into a "meal" consistency, not as fine as flour, but fine enough for my purposes. The ground flaxseed is undetectable when I stir it into my oatmeal. I even put it on top of pancakes, and it doesn't seem gritty.

I like that the mill has no metal parts that could corrode. The container is attractive glass, and the top is plastic with a ceramic mill. So far, it's easy to clean and easy to use. I also like the mill-on-top design and the fact that it has a cap. However, if you were to get some stubborn food stuck in the mill part, it may not be easy to clean it out.

Here's what I don't like about it: It takes a few moments to find the little niche to pry the cap off, and then the cap is unattached and could potentially get lost. Also, when it comes to grinding flaxseed, I want at least a teaspoon, not just a little spray. I typically count 100 twists each morning when I grind the seed. This makes my wrist tired. A device with a crank handle would probably be easier on the wrist, but I think I would still prefer this Kyocera mill for its compact size and convenience.

All in all, this was a good purchase for flaxseed. Despite the minor downsides, I'm still giving it 5 stars.

Customer Review: Brilliant item!

Great grinder! I've had other grinders, both cheap and expensive, made from plastic, glass, metal, wood, you name it, break down or give uneven grinds or be difficult to turn. This one is a keeper. The ceramic grinding mechanism is held in plastic by a sturdy plastic frame (which rotates against the way in which the top twists open), is good quality, and grinding is fairly fast (for pepper or similar spices). The grind is very fine on this one, however, and I sort of wish I had gotten a medium one instead. This is more of a food-topping grind, and not so much a cooking grind.

I've used multiple Kyocera mills for different spices: cloves, pepper, grains of paradise, various sea salts, cocoa nibs (!), flax seed (tedious on 'fine', probably get different grind setting), etc. Works great!

Don't be a dummy and put wet salt in this, however.

Customer Review: Great Peppermill
Summary: 5 Stars

A while ago, I purchased both the fine and coarse versions of the Kyocera Ceramic Mill with the intention of having the choice of fine or coarse ground pepper. For me, the fine mill works perfectly. The coarse couldn't get the peppercorns into the grinding teeth (the peppercorns were too big to fit).

Luckily, the fine mill does not have the same problem. While not super easy to turn, the mill is easy enough to use with large gripping surfaces. I have purchased a second fine mill to use as a sea salt grinder (and it works perfectly in that role as well).

The only negative I've found is that the grinding lid takes a bit of effort to remove from the glass jar for refilling. Otherwise, these are a high quality product that should last nearly forever since the design keep the grinding parts from wearing themselves down over time.

Customer Review: Highly recommended -- Collect a set!
Summary: 5 Stars

I highly recommend the Kyocera Ceramic Mills. I have eight, a mixture of the FINE and COARSE mills. I have mills filled with: Cumin, Ajwain, Cardamon seeds, Fennel, Fenugreek, and Allspice (for the allspice, you need to crack them first, so they are smaller, which is easy to do in a morter and pestal once a year when you refill). I did not have success grinding my own coriander seeds. I have larger ceramic mills for Salt and Peppercorns.

The result is so much easier than grinding all my own spices -- it takes seconds -- I grab a grinder and add freshly ground spices to most dishes I cook. Also, it's very easy to control amounts. Adding a few twists of cumin here, half a twist of cardamon there.

I found that this small up-front investment in mills has led me to use my spices a lot more! I'm a fan!

Customer Review: Thank you Kyocera
Summary: 5 Stars

I never thought it would be so difficult to find a mill that would grind wet sea salt.

I tried a Peugeot:
Is anything coming out?
Nope...
Hmm...adjust the knob, maybe?
Nope...
Try shaking it, maybe?
Nope...

Then came a William Bounds model. Even on the fine setting, the salt came out in clumps.

Finally I got this Kyocera, and voila! A nice, even spray of salt. Was that too much to ask? Thank you, Kyocera.
