Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Kidco Wood Safeway

Customer Review: Great all-around stair gate!
Summary: 5 Stars

Despite all of the reviews, this gate is not hard to install. All you need is about two hours of dedicated time, a little patience and some common sense. Lay out all of your parts first, then begin assembly of the actual gate. We used this gate at the bottom of our stairs, so we drilled directly into our banister. Not a big deal, you can fill the holes in with wood filler when the time comes.

Once installed, the gate is quite sturdy and open/closes easily with one hand (great when you have a baby/toddler in your arms most of the time). By the time our kids are tall enough to reach the latch to open the gate, they will surely know how to go up and down stairs and will not need a gate to prevent them from doing so. But, our gate is installed at the bottom so the first stair gives it the extra foot of height.

The wood looks great, too. Far better than the metal or mesh gates I've seen.

The only complaint is the parts to assemble the gate are plastic. Not the most ideal choice for longevity. I would have preferred metal parts...

Overall, this gate is an excellent choice for bottom or top of the stairs...both on safety and decor.

Customer Review: Handsome gate that works great
Summary: 5 Stars

I have two of these Angle Mount gates now as well as an older version of the wooden Safeway gate and I love them. They look nice, they swing nicely, and they latch firmly. The older version of the gate is simpler to latch, but I find it requires constant adjustment of the bolts since they are always coming loose. This new version of the hardware is slightly more finicky to set up and align, but then stays that way for all time, latching and unlatching smoothly through repeated use.
As for the difficulty of assembly, I didn't find it as confusing as some here claim. My four year old son helped lay out the parts and figure out how they went together. The long lasting quality and convenient use of this gate compared to cheaper gates (which I have owned and used) is worth the extra work to put it together.

Customer Review: Good quality wood gate
Summary: 5 Stars

This gate is very functional and highly versatile. It looks great and blends well with the decor of our room/hallway. It keeps both dog and baby of the stairwell without fail. I agree with other reviewers that installation is difficult; there are MANY parts. I recommend lying all the parts out and labeling them on a piece of cardboard prior to trying to put the thing together. All in all, it still took nearly a full hour; disappointing given much less expensive gates take minutes to install. I still gave it 5 starts given that it is the ONLY gate that I could install at the 80% angle between the wall stud and hardwood banister support.

Customer Review: Great gate
Summary: 5 Stars

This gate is everything I had hoped it would be. It is sturdy and secure, easy to operate and attractive. I agree with some of the reviews that the assembly instructions could be better but I assembled and hung it in 45 minutes. The reviews that say it was not a secure gate and they had to add extra screws to hold the panels together did not assemble it right. All the parts have a logical role and when they assembled right and tightened up, the gate is rock solid. I would recommend this gate to others. If fact I just bought a second one.

Customer Review: Great gate
Summary: 5 Stars

The stairs to our basement are open, meaning no door way, and there are two wood newel posts, one with the wood stair railing attached to it. So it was impossible to mount a gate on the inside of the newel posts (similar to how a door is mounted inside its frame. We had to find a gate that would mount on the front part of the posts, like this one does, kind of like a juliet balcony rail would). This gate was the only one I could find that would mount that way. So its been working great for us so far with our 9 month old.
