Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of KidCo G20 Black Safeway Wall Mount Top of the Stair GateCustomer Review: A good gate Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this gate for the top of our staircase. We have an old black metal railing and it blends in perfectly. I had my husband install it by drilling right into the metal rail. It is sturdy. Easy, one handed operation. Keeps the baby off the stairs. Only con is it makes a loud clanking sound when locked in to place (but that might be from our particular installation situation.) Overall I would reccommend without reservations.
Customer Review: Tricky to install but a very safe gate! Summary: 4 Stars
I researched stairway gates before selecting the Kidco G20. I especially read the user reviews. The gate instructions are a bit confusing but with the help of the user review suggestions, we were able to get it installed. It is extremely sturdy. We did use the Kidco gate installation kit as well to eliminate damage to the banister. The lock mechanism engages with a definite clicking sound when you press it into place.
Customer Review: Solid and easy to mount Summary: 4 Stars
The instructions were intimidating at first but ended up being clear and easy to follow. The gate is solid and feels very safe to me. I am very pleased.
Customer Review: HORRIBLE!! Buy the G22 gate instead!! Summary: 1 Stars
Our toddler rendered this gate inoperable in a matter of minutes!
We had purchased a Kidco Safeway G22 gate and extension two years ago and were VERY satisfied with it. Being in need of a second gate we purchased this Kidco Safeway G20 model, thinking it would be the same quality latch, just without the "angle-mount" wall hardware, that's not the case.
This gate latches by connecting to a threaded bolt rather than an actual latching mechanism (like the G22 has). The threaded bolts on either side have to stick out really, really far to reach the wall hardware. My toddler quickly figured out that it's really easy to unscrew the bolts and run off with them! Rendering the gate totally inoperable. Luckily I got the bolt from her before it ended up in her mouth. NO WAY is this gate toddler-proof!
Even when adjusted to the correct width, the latch is VERY cumbersome to use. I kept thinking it was latched and my toddler would come along and just push it open! I got frustrated with it within the first day. Honestly, it's really scary to think that this gate is recommended for "top of the stairs" use, that's how unsafe it is. This product might work well for containing pets but the latch mechanism is still very poor quality; the G22 gate is a far superior product, period.
Customer Review: Eyeball Rupture Summary: 1 Stars
This indeed is a solid gate. And when locked proves a sturdy barrier.
But there is a top locking "T" piece which sticks out horizontally by a few inches. When your toddlers eye height reaches approx. 30" this "T" piece has the real potential to either injure the eye straight on or pluck it out during swinging.. . . . . .. See customer image #3; Ignoring that latch which they rigged up. See the threaded screw protruding from the top bar? It has a "T" end ( literally a scoop).
This dangerous flaw is also found on some other metal gates. Be aware. Recall!
