Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of KidCo Food MillCustomer Review: She eats what we eat Summary: 5 Stars
Picked this grinder up at the food co-op. It seemed a bit simple but I was willing to give it a try. We had tried making baby food using the blender, but had trouble getting the consistency right, plus I hate trying to clean out the bits of food stuck around the blade.
We've also tried mashing and mincing, but we couldn't get the texture right. Our granddaughter was still gagging on the bits of minced meat or vegetable.
The first night had the grinder, we put a little of what we were eating (including the meat) into the chamber and began turning the blade as we pushed down on the cylinder. The ground food coming up through the little holes was not as silky smooth and airy as a blended version, but smoother than a chopped version. Not only did she eat it all up quickly, but now when we start eating, she makes it clear that we need to grind some up for her.
So instead of making a special batch of baby food, we just bring the grinder to the table with us.
It's small enough to drop into the diaper bag to take to restaurants and I personally think it's easier to wash than the blender.
Simple inexpensive alternative to jars of partially-eaten baby food.
Customer Review: As a dietitian I will recommend this great product to clients Summary: 5 Stars
I love this food grinder. It is great because it travels well (to restaurants and outside events) and doesn't need electricity and is great for the home too. This is a great way to use the foods you are already preparing for your baby's meals and a great way to save money from baby food sold in the jar. Growing up we had two of these because my sister was handicapp and could only eat pureed foods.
Please note that this grinder is to be used for first foods (not chunky foods). Because fruit and vegetables naturally have a lot of water some of them might need a thickener add (i.e. Thick-it) if you find it too watery. Also foods with a lot of fiber or meat may need be harder to push through - this is a manual grinder. I find it useful to add some broth/soup/gravy to meat after it has been ground to make it more pleasing to eat.
I also recommend Ellyn Satter's books "How to Get Your Kid to Eat ... But Not Too Much" and "Secrets of Feeding a Healthy Family" for guidelines on how and what to feed children.
Customer Review: Best Baby Food Grinder ever for Natural feeding from your own plate! Summary: 5 Stars
I used this product with both of my girls and it was a godsend! It is small and portable and can be easily carried along to a restaurant or friend's house or to your own dinner table. One can simply take the food from one's own plate and put teaspoons of the selected fish, rice, veggies, fruit, meat etc into the top of the grinder...what emerges is smooth, tasty REAL food from your own plate; just right for baby's palate. You have the choice to blend fish and veggies or grind separately for baby. The consistency of the food is like mashed potatoes and gives your baby a chance to accustom herself to the taste of REAL whole foods, not pasturized overly seasoned, processed baby foods. Both of my girls adore vegetables as a result of being fed them in their real form (ground smooth) from the Happy Baby Food Grinder. There is NO product that I have found as convenient, or efficient for feeding young babies the food you select to grind for them. I applaud the company that has made these great baby food makers for over 30 years!
Customer Review: Purees Chicken Wonderfully! Summary: 5 Stars
We got this in the mail yesterday. I had tried the food processors, choppers, blender, etc. to be disappointed when trying to puree meats for my 8 month old. Last night I tried this mill out with some boiled chicken. The mill didn't look like much at first. It pureed the chicken so fine that once I transferred it to my own dish and added some broth and mixed it thoroughly, it was almost as pureed as the Gerber jarred meats. My little one still can't swallow the meats unless they are finely pureed and this little mill did the trick! I am anxious to start fixing him up some beef and turkey with this mill! I will be sure to boil the meats and any other veggies or fruit I process in it because that will make all the difference, of course. I am posting some pics for everyone to see! My hands did get tired after a little while but I was milling enough to have some for the freezer. I got it done and felt accomplished that I was finally able to prepare fresh food suitable for my child!
Customer Review: one of my few must-have baby items Summary: 5 Stars
We love this baby food mill ~ I had to buy a second one, because my first was always out on loan.
My first mill was handed down by my sis-in-law. She used it a little, but not a ton. We used it for pretty much everything my baby ate (he hated commercial baby food!) That was 10 yeas ago. I have lost count of how many babies it has been through - at least 6.
My second mill, I've been stingy with & kept for myself :-) We're on our 3rd baby with THIS mill...
Some have complained that it is difficult to use. Yes, you do have to push down a bit with your opposite hand as you turn the handle, but I certainly don't think it's too hard. Milling at the table rather than the counter may be easier if you're a little on the short side - as I am.
This is a fantastic product and Amazon's price is just right
