Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Kidco Adhesive Mount Magnet Lock Starter SetCustomer Review: No more pinched fingers! Summary: 5 Stars
When we purchased our home, it was already baby-proofed from the previous family. When our little one started crawling around, we didn't think we would have to do anything to baby-proof our kitchen and bathrooms. However, the baby-proof locks that were already installed were the ones that allowed baby to open the cabinet door just enough to pinch her fingers. We decided to look for something else and found these on Amazon. After reading the great reviews, we bought a starter set.
After putting the locks on our kitchen cabinets, I can attest to the fact that they work great. We did not use the screws, just the mounting tape that comes with the set, and it sticks really well. After letting the locks "set" for 24 hours, both my husband and I can tug on the doors and there is no give at all. They were so simple to install - I couldn't believe it! For our kitchen locks, we just put the magnetic key on our refrigerator, so we didn't even have to use the little key holder that comes with the kit, which is nice because looking at our cabinets, there is nothing sticking out that would be a cosmetic eye sore.
We have ordered several more sets to use on the rest of our cabinets in the kitchen/bathroom. The only down-side is that they are a little pricey, but worth the peace of mind to know that your little one isn't drinking a bottle of windex in the next room, or getting her fingers pinched every day. My only complaint is that I wish they came in a jumbo pack!
Customer Review: Very quick and easy to install - almost foolproof. Summary: 5 Stars
These locks work great. To install them just peel off the tape on the part that goes on the cabinet and attach that part to the cabinet, temporarily attach the part that goes on the door to the part attached to the cabinet, peel off the tape from the door part, shut the cabinet door and the tape sticks to the door and voila, both pieces are attached where they need to be. Once attached, they work great, much better than the kind that let the child open the door a little bit and stick his hands inside. I use those on cabinets that I use a lot and that don't have anything dangerous in them. One thing that I found, is that these don't work well on drawers unless the optional screws are used. For some reason, when used on drawers the cabinet part of the latch doesn't stay in place well and so the drawer doesn't stay locked unless the latch is screwed in place . A tip when you install these, make sure that the magnet works on the cabinet you are installing them on. I ruined the adhesive on two of the locks, thinking I had a defective lock cause it stayed in the "unlocked" state, I removed one and replaced it with another before figuring out that that particular cabinet had something inside of it at the location I was trying to put the cabinet lock that made the cabinet lock stay in the "unlocked" state. The adhesive is EXTREMELY sticky, be sure that you are placing it where you want it, cause there is no repositioning or removing it without ruining it.
Customer Review: The best locks we found Summary: 5 Stars
We bought this pack along with the 4 lock pack. We tried several kinds of locks on the cabinet doors, and these are the only ones that actually worked for us. They are pretty easy to install, and I used the screws. I'm not sure that the adhesive would hold up to my son pulling on these for any extended time. Regardless, these work. Be forewarned, these things are huge! We only used them on the cabinet doors, not the drawers. They are fairly expensive and large to be used on some smaller drawers, or many drawers.
Like a reviewer below, I found that there are magnets in my cabinet doors. That was an interesting find to me, so make sure before you remove any adhesive tape that you check that. Those magnets will keep the latches from actually latching. Put it against the door first and move it around to make sure it doesn't drop down. I had that issue with one, so I ended up having to move it, and ruined the adhesive on one. That made installing that unit tough. Check first!
Once installed, these things are tough. They hang on tight, and the magnet is pretty strong. We don't even have to touch the cabinet on some of these. I would highly recommend these to anyone having problems with other locks.
Customer Review: Great little invention! Summary: 5 Stars
All I can say is WOW!
Drilling HOLES into your cabinets is a scary proposition. But still, you have to be able to do some hazard control when you have a curious baby in your home.
These locks are a great solution to both problems. I was able to install these in 5 minutes flat. This kit comes with what you need to start - 2 locks, a magenet key, and a key holder. This way you can test drive them before ordering more.
I followed the directions exactly wiping the area with alcohol before applying the adhesive and allowing the adhesive to "cure" for 24 hours before use. There's no way anyone is getting into these cabinets without the key which we have opted to put on the fridge instead of using the key holder. It's a magnet. It just makes sense.
You can order additional locks and keys if needed. Great marketing. Great product. Would highly recommend this lock system.
If you cant get it to work, you did something wrong. Read the instructions carefully BEFORE you start to install. The plastic installation "tabs" make it impossible to goof up. The trick is in the sequence. Don't miss a step or you'll be sorry.
Customer Review: How do you say "in love"? Summary: 5 Stars
I am seriously in love with these locks. I have tried various locks in an effort to satisfy fostercare home lisencing to no avail. These did the trick, and I can see why...they are not only childproof, but also adultproof.
They are very, very easy to install, so I guess you could also say they are idiot-proof. My only negatives are that in my cupboards, I had to use the screws (included) to ensure adhesion since the catch was too large for the inside of the cabinet, but this was a minor inconvenience for me since I'd already had other latches screwed in previously. The only other issue that I had was that I had to be careful not to screw the latch too tightly otherwise the hook wouldn't catch on it, but I just loosened the screws a little and it was fine.
I was also able to use this lock on a draw, although it was fiddly and took a little more work to get it positioned correctly.
Possibly my favorite feature of this lock is that you can turn it off, so if your first child is old enough to not need them, but you know you'll need them for the next kid etc, you can leave them in place but flick a switch so the hook disengages. Genius!
