Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Keurig My K-Cup Reusable Coffee FilterCustomer Review: Easy to Use; Learn Some Tricks for Better Coffee Summary: 5 Stars
I am very pleased with my Keurig My K-Cupt Reusable Coffee Filter. The ability to make coffee from my own beans not only saves money and waste but it also allows for more variety on the coffee I make. Using the My K-Cup Filter is simple. You remove the assembly from the pod door and drop the machine-washable filter assembly in. Fill the coffee filter up with grounds. Drop it in just like you would a pod, and then screw on the included lid. Then brew and enjoy.
Using your own beans compared to the self-contained K-Cups is obviously a little more messy and time consuming. I recommend filling the filter over the sink because inevitably a few grounds will fall out. Cleaning it is simple; just shake out the grounds and then rinse it quickly in the sink and its ready to go again. Just be aware of the inevitable potential for messiness and you won't be disappointed.
Also, the filter has the potential to make a weak cup of coffee. The filter can hold about 2.5 tablespoons of coffee grounds. There are markings on it for 1 and 2 tablespoons. If you fill it up to either of those locations, the coffee will be pretty weak. This is fine if, like my dad, you like weak coffee. However, if, like me, you like your coffee strong, you're gonna have to fill it all the way to the top. The instructions say not to compact the coffee into the filter; however, I recommend that you make sure that the coffee is nice and snug and to the top. I press it down pretty good with the spoon. Basically, if you don't have it filled to the top, the water leaks around the side before it goes through the beans and it seriously dilutes down your coffee. But if you do it right, you'll easily get a pretty strong and good-tasting cup of coffee.
The Keurig M K-Cup Reusable Coffee Filter does what it advertises: It allows you to use your Keurig brewer on your own beans...and it does it pretty well.
Customer Review: Use it RIGHT and it works wonderfully Summary: 5 Stars
I have read all the complaining about this product but I opted to buy it and try it anyway. I have found that it makes a fantastic (and strong if used properly) cup of coffee, that tastes great. It's easy to use and clean. I don't know what other people are doing to break it or clog it, so here is what I do to make this function well.
1) Use drip grind coffee, not espresso grind. Espresso grind will clog the mesh and you don't really need it for a good cup of coffee. Also, have your coffee ground in store or use a burr grinder. Blade grinders (spice grinders) only produce uneven grinds, making some tiny espresso grind like particles that can clog your filter.
2) Follow the manufacturer instructions. This means don't over fill it and don't pack the grounds into the basket. The gray lid is not a true screw top, and you don't need to tighten it way down, just a little to keep it in place.
3) To keep from making a mess, use a tablespoon scoop over a tupperware of coffee ground. I always store coffee in airtight container in the dark for the highest quality. Since I now have the coffee ground in store, it is the best way to keep it fresh.
4) To remove the K-cup holder in the machine, push it up from the bottom. I read some review by someone complaining about the danger of the sharp knife inside and how he mangled his hand. Don't stick your finger in there. It even tells you that on your machine.
5) Brew a medium or smaller cup if you like strong coffee. This is something I noticed with the K-cups in general. The more you want to brew, the weaker it gets. To fill a large coffee mug or a travel mug, I always brew a medium and a small cup using two k-cups. I do that with the my-cup also.
I really like my brewer and my "My-cup". To me, and I am a total coffee snob, it makes a really great cup of coffee.
Customer Review: "F I X" for the kcup, ( a good enough solution) Summary: 5 Stars
MAIN PROBLEM
I bought 6/7 of these already... the problem is.... the lid closes so tight that it (overtime-from high heat) chip's away at the 3 out-side notches on the cone, that holds the lid. Once the outside notches break, the seal is not tight, and coffee leaks all over the place...then u need to order a new one.
THE FINAL FIX
Take an orbital sander and sand-away the " top lip " (it's about 1/16 thick) on the top side of cone, above the 3 outside notches, You wanna make it flush or close to it, so that the lid can close properly
Enough so, that the notches on the lid and cone are centered,to one another. You'll see this when u turn it upside down as you close it. U should make scratches on the sides of base and lid, when aligned for future use, as a reference. (diagram below)
......lid notch......... (______)
Cone notch
When u have a new one... u'll notice that it doesn't close right..since the lip is to high. This prevents it from properly closing. since "lid notches" only grabs the edges of the " cone notches", prevents the lid from being at its center to the cones notches (diagram below)
lid notch (______)
Cone notch
After this lip is sanded away, this eliminates the chipping away process... several weeks now it working beautifully...the notches haven't broken...I believe I sanded a little to much, since it leaks from time to time
UPDATE 5/26/09
it works perfectly, that is, the notches are still intact
in my case i sanded a little too much, since coffee drips a little on the sides, but not a bad trade-off
Customer Review: Simple fix works great Summary: 5 Stars
I liked the concept of a single cup coffee maker but wanted to use my own coffee that my husbands roasts for me weekly. I know that with any of the gold filters, you can get some of the very fine grounds in your cup but you also get more of the coffee oils which I think means more flavor.
For Christmas, my husband gave me the Keurig Special Edition as well as the My K-Cup. I ordered a pack of two additional filters for the K-Cup so that it would be easy to make a couple of cups in a row. The My K-Cup worked great.
After about 6 months, we had a problem with the brewer but Keurig customer support was great and quickly sent a replacement. The problem I have been having with the new brewer is that the My K-Cup didn't work very well - overflowed, grounds in the coffee, etc. I was getting pretty aggravated but finally thought of checking the Amazon postings.
I saw the suggestion to slide the O-Ring down and tried it. IT WORKED!!!
Here are the simple instructions for this fix:
1. Open the lid and look under it. (You may need a flash light.)
2. See the needle that inserts the water into the K-Cup. At the top of this needle, you should be able to see an O-Ring.
3. Be careful - the needle is sharp.
4. Slide the O-Ring down until it is just above the opening the water comes out of at the bottom of the needle.
5. Make a cup of coffee with the My K-Cup.
6. My husband made a cup of coffee with the normal K-Cup and it did not push the O-Ring back up.
This solved my problem and I hope it works for you.
Customer Review: The best way to enjoy pod coffee. Summary: 5 Stars
I have the Breville pod coffee maker and after some experimentation have come up with a great cup-a-joe. I first tried some of the pods that came in the box but they tasted plasticky and flavorless. I even bought a few boxes of pods from Bed Bath & Beyond and had the same problem. A friend said they buy theirs thru the internet and have had no problem. My assumption is that mine were old and stale.
I then tried the "My K-Cup" that comes with the Breville using my Seattle's Best pre-ground Organic Breakfast Blend. I use the second smallest cup size, and am very pleased with the results. Each cup is fresh and hot as opposed to my drip coffee maker which made a great first cup but went downhill from there.
The next problem I had was given the optimal size-to-flavor ratio I need to make 3 cups to clear my morning fog. I now have 2 "My K-Cups" and am about to invest in 2 more. 3 for me and 1 for my husband's Dunkin' Donuts coffee (which he prefers brewed on the next size up). At night I fill the water reservoir prepare my K-Cups put 1 in the Breville and just pop the K-Cups in as needed. It may seem a pricey investment at first but in the long run will actually be cheaper, yet I still have the convenience of the pods. I then clean them after the morning rush is over.
As to the breakage many people are encountering, I suspect it's due to over-filling the filter. I use 1 level scoop and there is room for the grounds to swell without pushing against the top. Instead of packing the filter to get a stronger cup, you might try adjusting the cup size.
