I got this as a gift. When my son was three months old the whole family became sick with the flu. If I didn't have this thermometer I don't know what I would have done. I tried to take a rectal on him but he was so wiggly I gave up (fearing I would perforate his rectum). I used the thermometer, my husband used it, and we used it on the baby (constantly). With babies and kids you really have to pull the ear down and back to get a good reading (as the instructions will tell you) for adults pull the ear up and back. Nothing is going to as accurate as a rectal temp on a baby. I feel this is a great tool for spot checking temps. If you really want to be sure you can always go for the rectal (The hospital sent a digital rectal therm. home with us (about $5 at the grocery store)) My son is 18mo now and I definitely still use the ear thermometer. Now it fits better in his ear than when he was a baby. I don't worry at all about accuracy. I think I will use this thermometer for years to come. It has a nice case where I can keep all the probe covers, thermometer, and instruction manual together (less clutter). Durability is great I haven't replaced the batteries yet. It saves the last temp you took in case you forget. My advice is if you want to buy an ear thermometer then buy a very good one this is not the place to cheap out. BTW I reused probe covers for a day or so just wipe them off. I'm just now looking into buying replacement probe covers. Had the item for 1 1/2 years.Customer Review: must have

We got this as a shower gift. It works well and gives an accurate reading...we compared the reading to an underarm temp and it was almost exactly the same.
The only problem we had was the battery dying out quickly, but we were able to find a replacement for it without a problem. We just keep an extra battery in the house in case.

I have been trying to use this by the directions for days now, and cannot get a consistent reading. Its fast, and would be wonderful if it worked, but sadly it is WRONG! I got a measurement of 98.1 and then 100.4 in a matter of 10 seconds apart. And this is on myself, not a wiggly child.
The thermometer is going back! Do not waste the $$, but a digi for under the arm and take yourself out for a nice dinner.

I received this for my baby shower and the first time my daughter had a fever I tried to use it and got a crazy temp so i tried the rectal one and could not beleive how off it was. I even tried it on myself it says that my temp is off by alot like 3-5 degrees. Yet it works on my hubby so I am not sure Iknow we are using it correctly but no luck in having it give me and my daughter an accurate reading well maybe you would have better luck then we do but I woul dnot wast my momey on this product.
