Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Thermoscan 1-second Read Thermometr , 1-second Read-out

Customer Review: Not accurate for infants
Summary: 4 Stars

Because infants have short ear canal and lots of left over debris from birth, ear thermometers are notoriously inaccurate for infants. However, it is a convenient way to quickly gauge whether temperature is higher than normal for a squirmy infant. I take my baby's temperature once in a while to get a feel for his normal body temperature. When my baby had a fever, the ear thermometer showed measurements ranging from 99 - 104, although I couldn't determine the accurate temperature, I knew that his temperature was higher than normal. If I determine that his temperature is high, I then take a rectal temperature for an accurate reading (with a 10 second rectal thermometer).

Customer Review: Easy to use
Summary: 5 Stars

Very easy to use and our guy didn't mind the prob in his ear. Highly recommend it.

Customer Review: Not very accurate for infants
Summary: 3 Stars

I was a ped nurse not too long before i became a mom and it is not recommened that you use these thermometers on infants. But I must say that the ear thermometers used in the hospital seemed a lot more accurate that this particular one. It is all abt technique and even someone like me still has trouble with it. My husband and I used it one ourselves and got temperatures off by a degree with several reads! It is probably more user error than a fault in the thermometer. I still think a rectal temperature is the most accurate on an infant.

Customer Review: be very very careful - model 3520
Summary: 1 Stars

I've had 4 Thermoscans, and the only one that worked was the original Thermoscan built several years ago. After its LED konked out, we purchased the newer models and every one of them read much too high. Normal readings read in the 100's. I even took my daughter to the emergency room because her temp. read 106. I took the Thermoscan with me to the hospital just to show them the temp. When they took her temp. it read 99, when I took it with the Thermoscan it read 102(I had given her some ibuprofen.) I love how easy and quick it is, but don't trust it without using a different thermometer for verification.

Customer Review: Works great...
Summary: 5 Stars

This thermometer is great and super quick if you suspect your little one has a fever. Although it is not completely accurate in very young children, it does a fine job of detecting a higher than normal temp. which is all you really need to see (most pediatricians/hospitals use a similar model). I recommend getting a temperature reading from the ear and then, if high (over 100 for under 6 months old, over 104 otherwise) getting a rectal or axillary (underarm) temp for more accuracy, although most times you won't need to. Like others who have posted, I also get three readings and go with the highest.
