Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Jura-Capresso H2O Plus Glass Water KettlesCustomer Review: Excellent for real people, not for elitists (apparently) Summary: 5 Stars
After being pushed away for a time by harsh reviews about the "horrible plastic" taste, I wound up buying the Capresso kettle anyway. I'm very glad I did. There's not much more to say which hasn't been covered by previous reviewers, but I will say this:
The people who complain about the "horrible plastic" taste should caveat their reviews. I think they're drinking very light teas; the flavor of which may be colored by being exposed to 5mm of plastic. They may also have an extremely delicate pallet. It's also possible their expectations might have exceeded reality. Any or all of these things may have prompted the overly-harsh reviews.
I like bold, aromatic coffee, and detect no hint of plastic or "burnt metal" as some reviews have pointed out. The kettle I just unpacked last week has an automatic shutoff and is not a danger. After living in Germany for 6 years, my expectations were high but exceeded by the Capresso. Thanks for reading.
Oh, and one last thing: I lived in Germany 2002~ Aug 2009 and almost all my (European and American) friends used plastic water cookers. Yes, even the dedicated tea drinkers. Funny that...
Customer Review: Cool way to heat water Summary: 5 Stars
I like this kettle so much, that I bought a second one for my sister and am thinking of buying one for my mom. It has classic good looks and boils water in two to three minutes. What more could you ask for? I also like that it's lightweight. Filled with water, it's lighter that some of the other brands are when they are empty. I even think it's nifty that there's a groove underneath the base to wrap the cord, so you don't need to have extra cord draped across the kitchen counter.
Since a number of people have mentioned the smell, I think I should address that as well. Most small appliances that have heating elements have a smell until the oil (or whatever the coating is) burns off. In this case, the heating element is mostly enclosed. The only place it is open to the air is at the top of the handle -- and that is closed when the lid is closed. To allow the smell to dissipate, I left the lid open whenever the kettle was cooling. It probably took about a dozen uses for most of the smell to disappear since the heating element isn't actually turned on for very long during each use.
Customer Review: No foul smell/ taste here! Great product!!! Summary: 5 Stars
I've been using this kettle for a year now and this is a quick, efficient and solid product. I've had no issues regarding the smell or taste of water coming from it. Though I do use filtered water (not sure if that makes a difference). I use it daily to make my coffee (for French Press) and it has worked flawlessly. The full kettle takes less than 5 minutes to boil and has a great automatic shut-off switch once it boils.
It is very attractive on the counter, and for scale build-up, I just swish-around some vinegar and it's as good as new.
The glass does seem a bit fragile....I'm sure if it gets a decent-sized bang it will crack. Thankfully it's been a year and no such problem.
If there was something I would have liked on the kettle is maybe a bell that would go off when it stopped.....if you're outside of the kitchen you can't hear the water boiling and I can hardly hear the 'click' of the automatic shut-off switch. [It obviously can't 'whistle' like a regular kettle.]
I would recommend this product as based on my personal experience, I've had no problems at all.
Customer Review: i love this kettle! Summary: 5 Stars
I was a little worried about putting this on my wish list because of the likelihood of getting a chemical smell... well, I got it for Sol Invictus and I am so excited!! It's beautiful and fun to watch, it works fine so far (have only had it for a week), and the smell cleared out after a cleaning and 4 or 5 non-drinking boils. I love being able to make tea all throughout the day without dealing with pans and without all the wasted energy that goes into heating water on the stove.
I love the simple design, which is contemporary without being overly modern or pretentious. I absolutely detest plastic, especially in food heating applications, so I'm glad I'll never have to upgrade again. I really feel like this is the best a kettle can get. And it's quite affordable, to boot!
Lastly, I'd like to note that I use water that's been filtered through a Brita filter. Maybe others are having issues because their water has impurities that react to the manufacturing chemicals or heating element...? Who knows.. I'm happy and totally recommend this kettle.
Customer Review: Glass kettle is great Summary: 5 Stars
This was the electric kettle recommended by Comsumer Search. My mother in law moved in with us and she likes all her beverages warm, so I wanted a unit that could stand up to repeated use every day. I'm glad I ordered it. A glass kettle is ideal- you can see the water level 30 feet away without needing to glare into a small gauge, you can see the stages of heating...so you can cut it off if you don't want a complete boil, it's very easy to clean, the 360 base allows it to be placed down simply, it heats water very quickly (about 5 min when full with cold water). The unit looks good, and becuase it's see though, it looks less intrusive than a stainless or plastic container.
Some readers said they smell/taste a chemical scent from a faulty gasket or something. I've never had this problem, and I think you won't either, since it's all glass with a stainelss steel heating element. I'm extremely happy with this product- it has my recommendation.
