Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Jura-Capresso H2O Plus Glass Water Kettles

Customer Review: Pretty and functional, but dangerous
Summary: 3 Stars

This is an attractive kettle. It does its job well, boiling water quickly and quietly. The prominent silver heating element does get discolored with little black/gray spots for some reason fairly quickly, and vinegar treatments do not get it back to looking like new. By the way, I did not experience an odor or taste like other reviewers mentioned. I scrubbed and boiled a few pots prior to first use for consumption, which probably helped.

Three stars is a very generous rating, considering what happened to me. After six months of daily use, I was pouring boiling water from this kettle when the glued-on handle separated from the glass, causing the lid to pull out from the top of the handle, and the bottom part of the handle to separate from the kettle. The entire kettle fell to the kitchen counter, spilling boiling water everywhere and very badly burning a 2" x 5" area of my belly where it had spilled over the counter onto me. This happened a week ago, and it still hurts.

The pot was still under warranty, and their customer service rep was courteous, providing an address and a reference number for me to return the kettle for a new one.

I hope they get this design flaw fixed before more people are injured--maybe encircle the top rim with a stainless steel band through the handle, and find a better, heat-resistant adhesive, since the handle is just glued to the glass. Otherwise, this is a beautiful pot, and it operates well. While I won't be filling the next pot to the "max" mark (maybe half that) in order to minimize the weight and reduce the force on the handle, common sense would dictate that a product like this ought to be over-engineered to prevent failure such as this.

Customer Review: I have owned three of these...
Summary: 3 Stars

This will be the fourth I am buying ... so that should say something. But, yes, I got one with the "foul odor" - and let me assure non-believers that it really was a stink. From the vessel, not from the base. Boiled it a dozen times, once with vinegar, it never died away. But I never had that with the others, and Zabar's took it back (although with a quizzical look).

The first and second of these "died" - that is, something in the heating element (not the base) just stopped working. Took it apart, I couldn't figure out what went wrong. I had not saved the warranty (and anyway they were a year or more old) so I wrote it off to planned obsolescence.

This one I am going to keep track ... and, yes, I love Amazon. Horrible to hear what others have to say about Capresso customer service.

Customer Review: Excellent until it died - 6 months old
Summary: 3 Stars

OK I realize these may not be made for a three to four times per day use. But that's what I do. I have loved it until it just died. I had none of the reported odor issues. It is a tad loud, but it heats the water fast & it sure gets hot - - perfect for tea. Exactly what I wanted & correct size. Problem is - after six (6) months it's just died. Now I guess it's still under warranty. Problem is - I have to find the paperwork & I have too much to do to deal with that. I've had Krups & something else before. The American brand died after a year. The Krups lasted for about 18 months. Now this one only 6 months. Bad trend as far as I'm concerned. So - would I recommend this one - No. I can not do that, six months is not long enough lifespan for this item at this price.

Customer Review: Loved it while it lasted.
Summary: 3 Stars

We've gone through two of these. The first one lasted less than a year before the heating element went out. The unit was replaced under warranty. We use the kettle once to twice a day, and clean it regularly. The replacement has lasted about 13 months (just out of warranty, this time) and it's heating element is out again. The company merely told us that since it's out of warranty, they'll give us a discount on a THIRD unit, but they weren't willing to replace it again. We're just not willing to bite a third time. Sorry, Capresso, but although we raved about your product to begin with, and loved it when it was running, you've lost a customer.

Customer Review: Good for one year
Summary: 3 Stars

We received our Capresso Plus Glass as a gift from someone who had set our previous electric kettle on the stove (oops!). It is undeniably beautiful, as these things go, and worked quite well at first. It was also very easy to clean (soak in vinegar & water for a couple of hours). After a year, however, it began to fail to reach boiling, thus also failing to trigger the shut-off switch. It would simmer and rest, simmer and rest, indefinitely. I would imagine that this might be a fire hazard, were it to become empty. I regret that it did not last longer. I really liked it.
