Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Jura-Capresso H2O Plus Glass Water KettlesCustomer Review: Very impressed * 08/09 UPDATED Summary: 5 Stars
This was a gift to myself for Christmas and after reading lot of reviews on different pots and whatnot on Amazon, I went with this one.
I've had it a week now, using it everyday and so far all I can say is how impressed and pleased I am with this pot. It looks good just sitting there on the counter, but more importantly, it functions as advertised.
I like the auto-off, it has a substantial feel to it, not cheap. The base has a rubber base, (that's where I think some smell plastic)... cause it's not the decanter... that's glass and metal.
If this pot acts up, I'll amend this review later on. So if you're looking for a hot water pot, this little gem should get consideration.
August 2009 UPDATE: After almost nine months of use I am still VERY satisfied with this little pot. To the many that complain about the smell... individuals differ obviously, but though I smelled the silicone smell initially, it quickly went away and for a long time now, there has been no smell. I often left water sitting in it the first month thinking that the water would help draw out some of the smell, and I think I was right. Who knows if they've changed the silicone they use or whatever, but my experience is, it smells no more than any new plastic anything when you first get it but the carafe is glass.
I have used it as frequently as daily when the weather was colder and have used it at least say, 10 times/ month since owning it and I've had no problems at all. You're mileage may vary but I still don't hesitate to recommend this pot for rapidly heating water to a boil.
Customer Review: Love this kettle whole-heartedly Summary: 5 Stars
I spontaneously bought this kettle in a store, without looking on Amazon first. That's unusual for me because I usually check user reviews on Amazon before buying. When I got it home and checked Amazon I was a bit dismayed to read the reviews which mentioned a broken handle and a "foul chemical odour". I've had it for about 6 weeks now and I have to say I LOVE it and I don't particularly recognize my kettle in the negative reviews.
Here's why I like it: it boils water fast; it looks pretty on my countertop and nicely compliments my stainless steel teapot and French press; I like that it's made of glass and not plastic; ergonomics are great - I like the convenience of its being cordless and it just feels nice when I set the kettle down on the base - like it's slightly cushioned; it's easy to use.
To address some of the other users' concerns: Mine doesn't smell of anything and neither does the water it boils; the handle is secured with screws and seems sturdy (I've tried yanking it just in case - I think this may have been a fault with an older version of this kettle - dunno); the inside of the lid is plastic - if you want to 100% avoid plastic this is not the kettle for you. If that's the case you may need to boil your water in a stainless steel pot or a stove-top kettle.
Anyone know of a 100% plastic-free electric kettle? There's definately demand out there for one. I feel like the manufacturer of this product is missing a selling-point by having the plastic-lined lid. It doesn't bother me particularly, but plastic-free would have been a nice bonus.
Customer Review: Great Electric Kettle Summary: 5 Stars
I had a Black & Decker kettle, that was a few years old and quite frankly, rarely used. A couple of months ago we started using it twice a day, until it suddenly stopped working.
That set me on a search for a new electric kettle.
I did not have many criteria, just really three:
- It had to be cordless
- I wanted one that could be positioned in any which way on its base.
- It boiled water
I came across the Capresso on Amazon. It met my two criteria, plus I liked its size, looks and that it was glass.
I was somewhat concerned about the reviews referring to a chemical smell, but there seemed to be more good reviews than bad reviews.
It also struck me that people invested what seemed like an inordinate level of energy and emotion in, let's face it, something boils water.
Some of the reviews struck me as verging on hysteria, making it sound like the kettle was made out of kryptonite.
The Capresso arrived just yesterday. Yep, it's been here just 1 day, so let me give you my impression:
1. I'm not quite sure what the talk is about a smell. I think I have an extremely sensitive nose and it doesn't smell particularly foul, if in fact at all. It smells sort of like a kettle.
2. It boils water quickly
3. It's attractive
4. It takes up little counter space
I'm extremely pleased with the purchase and am very happy I chose it.
Customer Review: Can't live without it! Summary: 5 Stars
I've owned my Capresso water kettle for just over two years, and purchased it here on Amazon. This small appliance is the single most used kitchen gadget I own. I get up in the morning and turn on my kettle just before jumping in the shower. When I get out of the shower, my water is just cool enough to make a smooth cup of green tea. It's a simple pleasure in my life I can't live without. And, I certainly couldn't manage the alternative of making hot water on the stove or in the microwave. This product improves the quality of my morning and has been a staple in my routine....but it's also helped me break the starbucks habit which is saving me a pretty penny.
I have had not one single issue with my pot. My friend, who inspired me to get mine, has had hers for 6 years with not one single issue. I investigated every brand out there before selecting this product and I'm really glad I did.
My kettle hasn't had any odor problems. I think this is because I use it frequently and the boiling water keeps the product clean. I do, have times when post-boiled water sits in my pot for several days or a week while I'm traveling for work. I simply dump it out, refill, and boil as usual. I am careful not to fill the pot with water unless I plan on boiling it. I also allow the pot to turn itself off after a boil, instead of stopping the kettle with slightly warm water (pre-boil). This is a very intuitive product.
Highly recommended!
Customer Review: Fixed the STINK problem!!! Summary: 5 Stars
I had done some pet sitting for some friends that had one of these. Loved the design and boils
water so fast. Theirs did not stink. I was leery of all the bad reviews because of the toxic, "plastic-y"
smell. I tried the vinegar...which just made it smell vinegary and toxic, then lemon juice...no diffferent.
Then boiled some salt water (don't know why I thought of that, lol, and actually it seemed to help
a little bit) then it struck me to try activated charcoal!!! Don't know how much you know about activated
charcoal but EVERYONE should have this precious stuff. Vital in case of poisoning (in fact they will use it in the ER) , good for wounds, burns a number of things. It's inexpensive and non-toxic, don't travel with out it.
I have a large container of it. So I put some water in, just enough to cover the silver dome, put 2 large scoops
of the activated charcoal, and boiled the water. Let it rest, boiled it again. Let it sit in there for a couple of hours and decided to check it. Poured the black water down the drain and put some soapy water in and swished it around, rinsed it out well. Charcoal is messy stuff and it clings. So I got a couple of paper towels and wiped
the inside out and viola! NO STINK!! Charcoal not only absorbs odors but toxins. I will probably do that again from time to time. But so glad that plasticy smell is gone, gone, gone!
