Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Capresso H2O Plus Glass Water Kettles

Customer Review: FAST AND ATTRACTIVE IN THE KITCHEN
Summary: 5 Stars

This kettle is great. 3 1/2 minutes for 5 cups of boiling water. Its also fun gazing at the liquid bubbles as they start to float off the metal dome in the bottom of the pot. I've had no problems with this pot including any smell or steam or pouring problems. A great high quality kettle.

No electric kettle in the U.S. will boil water as fast as those in the U.K....they have a different electrical supply system which generates power at a higher rate (their kettles can boil water in about 1-2 minutes)

Oh its also attractive on my counter.

Customer Review: my second one
Summary: 5 Stars

After years and years of hard use, my initial Capresso kettle had problem with the thermostat. I'll play with it when i find tim but in the meantime, I had to have another. I miss the shiny chrome finish on the original, but this does what it's supposed to do...heat water and automatically shut off. The fact that it's so pretty was a big selling feature.

Customer Review: Yuck - Tastes like Plastic
Summary: 1 Stars

The heating element of this kettle is covered with plastic. When the water is heated it tastes like plastic. It is one of only a few items I have ever bought that I returned. It does look cool when it boils, but it is not worth it. Save your time and money and buy a stainless steel water kettle.

Customer Review: Rubber/silicone washer around the heating element boils with water and emits foul smell: Dangerous Product!!!
Summary: 1 Stars

This is, indeed, an awesomely designed kettle, unrivaled by any. A glass kettle is just a brilliant design.

But it has a serious design flaw. The heating element is like half a metal ball that protrudes from the bottom of the kettle. In order to place the glass kettle around it and seal it, they use a silicone/rubber washer.

This is what causes the foul smell. I cannot believe how people can simply fail to understand that even if the smell goes away, the chemicals emitted in the water do not! And I cannot understand why people are giving manufacturers such an easy time and not look after their own health.

Saddest thing, this is the easiest flaw to fix. Instead of a glass bottom, they should have had a stainless steel bottom that could fuse seamlessly with the heating element. The bottom could form a short rim up the sides of the kettle, and the glass could be fitted into this metal base. This would still require some material to seal the glass into the metal, but at least it would not be so exposed to the boiling water.

Anyway, they need to rethink this. Back to the store it goes--though it matched oh so well with my awesome Bodum Kona all glass coffee drip maker. What a pity....

The Hamilton Beach 10 cup is my next choice (available through the manufacturer, though not Amazon.

Customer Review: Beautiful but Slightly Disappointed
Summary: 4 Stars

Almost all the electric kettles on the market have some sort of plastic attached much too close to the area where the water is boiled. I was extremely excited to find an electric kettle that didn't have a plastic interior or any obvious plastic attached to the spout. I bought one immediately. To my disappointment, there was a rubber ring for the base where the metal part boiled the water met the glass bottom. This wash is also used for on-the-go coffee mugs/decanters. Despite this character flaw, I boiled some water, I used reverse osmosis water and the water came out, tasting pretty good. I suggest the first 3 boils be tossed out. I'm still keeping it though, it's one of the better ones on the market and I've given up hunting. Perhaps I'll reconvert to an old fashioned kettle, if I can't stand my new toy's single flaw. Oh yeah, it looks gorgeous on my counter, next to my standing mixer.
