Customer Review: Works great and EASY TO CLEAN Summary: 4 Stars
I'm generally suspicious of anything advertised in infomercials. "Not available in stores" usually means "if you saw this piece of junk up close in a store, you'd never buy it".
But I don't eat enough vegetables and fruits and I've wanted to try juicing for years, so I picked up this model of the Jack LaLanne juicer at Costco for $93 plus tax. After two weeks I'm extremely pleased with it.
I juice mostly carrots, celery, apples, and ginger root but I've also tried mango, oranges, fennel, parsley, and a beet. It seems to do good work with all of them though I understand this type of centrifugal juicer is less effective with wheatgrass or leafy greens. But that's not what I use it for, so no problem.
EASE OF CLEANING is my number one consideration in buying any kitchen appliance. If it's tricky or difficult to clean, it will end up sitting on a shelf collecting dust. This machine turns out to be surprisingly easy to clean using my dishwasher.
After juicing, I unscrew the blade (watch your fingers) and screen and rinse them off under the faucet, using the included vegetable brush to remove any stuck-on material. I use a little spatula to dislodge chunks of pulp from the underside of the hood, briefly rinse the plunger and throw all the removable pieces into the dishwasher. This whole process takes at most two minutes.
I never use heated drying on my dishwasher, so I don't have to worry about anything melting -- a concern because some of the washable parts of this machine, which look like stainless steel, are actually durable plastic with a metallic coating. I just run the cycle, then open the door so the dishes can air dry. Turn your dishwasher's heated drying OFF when you wash your juicer, or anything else made of plastic you think might melt, and you'll never have the problem of things warping or melting, as some posters have experienced.
This model includes an extra cutting blade, which is great, since any juicer blade will need replacing after a year or so -- even if you don't dull it by accidentally inserting a mango pit. (I could have kicked myself for that! Yikes!)
I use this machine about twice a day and it's actually led to me keeping my kitchen cleaner, since I run the dishwasher twice a day now, rather than twice a week before. lol
I'm sure there are Juicers like the Breville that are more solidly-built or superior in other ways, but they also cost 2 to 3 times what this one does.
A few tips: READ THE DIRECTIONS! LOL Alternate soft things with harder ones like carrots or apples. Sometimes soft pulp may clog the spout where the juice comes out. Notice when this happens and just run the tip of a knife or spoon over the little plastic button that keeps the juice spout from splashing, to unclog it. If you don't, the reservoir will fill up and juice will start leaking down the sides of the machine all over your counter.
Don't put too many things, like apple slices, in the chute at once since they can get wedged in there before they reach the blade. If something seems not to be going through, try gently lifting the plunger up and down. This can let the fruit or veggies bounce around and rearrange themselves for a moment so they hit the cutting blade at a better angle. Slice things like ginger root that have a very tough rind in half, so the blade doesn't just spin against the rind.
I'm very happy with this machine, use it every day, and would recommend it to anyone as an entry-level juicer. Get the model with the extra blade.
Customer Review: Healthy juice, tedious machine Summary: 4 Stars
I'll say this: I used to be a massive pop drinker to the point where I can literally finish a 12 pack by myself in 2 days or so. With my New Years resolution to stop drinking the stuff (haven't had a drop since; see? A resolution actually being done), I decided to use my dad's new juicer he got for Christmas and strangely enough, I seem to be using it a lot more than he is or anyone else for that matter. The juice it makes is delicious and incredibly healthy, nearly clearing any problems the excessive pop drinking made...only the machine itself is a bit of a hassle.
Basically I really only use this machine for one thing: fruit drinks with my current favorite being a combination of orange, pineapples and bananas or switching out the pineapple for strawberries. Only the machine doesn't take the bananas and strawberries well so into the blender go which is of course perfect for mixing everything together. While there's usually less juice than I'd think there'd be, it's incredibly good in the end. The machine itself is quite easy to put together with at most 5 pieces to clean: the top, the food pusher, the blades, the base with the spout and the screen. The sound is nicely muted though sometimes some of the fruit is a bit tougher, requiring a more forceful push. Oh and by the way: instead of cleaning the pulp bin too, just use a plastic bag like from the supermarket. We always have ton extras anyway.
Now for the problems: one is that the machine maintenance is a bit too...shall we say, long. It's best to clean the machine after every use so the pulp doesn't cake and dry up and make cleaning a hassle and I like using paper towel for the lid and the spout base but doing the screen is rather annoying and it takes quite a bit of time to do the whole thing just for one glass. The other is the spout itself in that it's a bit too small with a plastic guard there for...something but the problem is that the groove inside the base isn't at a slant towards the spout so you might take everything off and all of a sudden find juice still in the groove.
For people looking for a healthy diet, it's always great to pick up a juicer though which particular one is a bit up in the air. This one is recommended, just be prepared for a lot of work afterwards.
Customer Review: Good juicer for the price Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this model because I simply couldn't find the difference between Standard, Deluxe, Pro, and Elite - turns out Deluxe has the push-up spigot to stop leaks, Pro additionally has a steel mesh, and . This is the second juicer I've owned, the first went back right away as being far too cheap. This one was mid-priced and I'm not sure I'll bother upgrading to a Breville anytime soon.
First, and most importantly, I use this in addition to a blender. A juicer cannot take the place of a blender, unless it's a 2-in-1, it's meant for extracting juice to combine with pulpier fruits or other liquids. It has no blending or mixing capacity whatsoever, DO NOT buy it expecting blender functionality. I use it once a week or so in big batches and mix the juices in a blender with bananas, protein powder, berries, for some awesome workout power boosts and mental focus. I often include some of the pulp for extra fiber as well.
I think it's a little on the large side already, but it's a good trade-off where it is, fits just under the cabinets. It does extract a lot of juice, and it is truly whisper quiet when it's not juicing. When it is, it sounds a bit like a quiet power saw. Very nice. It's easy to clean with some water pressure, quick and simple to disassemble. I don't let it sit and dry, though.
Downsides: I find cleanup cumbersome, just because the parts are so large and barely fit into two sinks. The flat bowl inside is definitely poor design, I have to tip it to get everything to drain out. Thick skins and cores can slow it down considerably. It takes some practice to quickly take the top off to clean a clogged blade, and it's a bit inconvenient, but it's not that hard and usually only has to be done for very fibrous cores (pineapples, mangoes). I'm going to look into the suggestion to place an O-ring to prevent interior leaks; I've had that happen while trying to drain the last of the juice once. The manual that comes with it is also partly wishful thinking, I mostly use my own experience as a guide.
I will update if anything happens to it over time.
For $89, I give this 3.5-4 stars, but if it was the regular price of over $100, I'd probably lower it to 3.
