Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Imusa VICTORIA-85008 Victoria Cast Iron Tortilla Press, 8-InchCustomer Review: Wonderful...with some adjustments (read below) Summary: 5 Stars
I will rate this a 5, but with a few comments on adjustments I have made to make this really meet it's potential. First of all, this is very sturdy. I have owned mine for over a month now, and have made a countless amount of flour and corn tortillas since (not bad for a gringo, eh?). Some reviewers mentioned the dough sticking, so having to use parchment paper. No way! I lightly flour the top and bottom every 6 tortillas or so, and remove the flattened dough with a spatula. Works great! For flour tortillas, this press does not get them thin enough for my liking, so I use the press, then use a one-hand rolling pin to flatten it a bit more, rolling it right there on the press or for larger tortillas, on a floured board. Much faster than rolling the whole thing out by hand. Corn tortillas come out just right, as long as you use the spatula. If they are too sticky, add a bit more masa to the dough. Make sure with either recipe, you place the ball of dough slightly off-center toward the hinge before pressing it out.
I never use soap on my press. I believe with cast iron, it is better to let it season to prevent stickiness later on. If needed, I wipe it with a damp towel and store for our next fiesta meal.
To really have super success make sure to let your freshly cooked tortillas steam in a tortilla keeper or under a thick kitchen towel. This will soften them before serving. Good eating!

this product is great, i was reading all the reviews before purchasing and wondered about some reviews, because YES it comes with instructions, they are ON THE BOX , yes there is no extra paper, but why , the instruction is on the box in english and spanish! It recommends also to put a plastic bag/ paper between the press, so the dough will not stick. People who don't read the instructions will have a problem working with the tortilla maker. To get the tortilla off the plastic, you first lift it from one side off, put the plastic back on and flip it over , now you take the plasic of this side off, keep it off, turn it over and take the other already loosened up plastic off, now you can bake it in the pan. This whole procedure is important, so you don't ripp the tortilla since it is thin! frying - no oil - and about 50 sconds each side, heat up the pan first before you start, it frys better. if you take a piece of dough the size of a golf ball or little smaller, you get about a 5-6 inc tortilla, put the ball a little off center- like somebody else already recommended - more toward the back and the tortilla comes out more even- you may have to try out a bit - remember just when you started playing with play dough? trying out different things? :) One thing is true- it is time consuming, but to do it together as a family is the most fun! My whole family loves it! Hope this review is helpful!
Customer Review: Great money saving product Summary: 5 Stars
amazon does not pack this well as our handle was broke, we e-mailed amazon & they sent us a pre-paid return shipping label & sent another before we sent the broke one back. Works Great, presses pie and pizza crusts too. Easy Tortilla's: 4 cups flour, 2 tsp. salt, 1/2 cup oil or shortening ( shortening is best ), 1 cup very warm but not hot water, mix flour and salt in a bowl & sift if possible ( add a pinch of baking powder for fluffier torts ), add oil or shortening & mix until well distributed, add warm water & mix till it clumps into a semi dry doe ball, turn out & knead about 50 times trying not to over work the doe ( overworking makes the doe tough ), divide & form into small balls cover & let stand 15 minutes ( getting the size of these doe balls rite for a proper tort takes some adjusting ball size to get a perfect size tort ), line both sides of press with wax paper or plastic wrap to avoid sticking ( a touch of cooking oil on wax/plastic wrap aids the pressing process & torts peel off rite into your hand ), brown lightly on both sides in cast iron pan, Lodge make a good one & Amazon sell it, search for cast iron griddles on amazon, Eat fresh or freeze in zip lock bags to Enjoy latter. YUM YUM, Enjoy!!!
Customer Review: Very Useful item. Summary: 5 Stars
Not to offend the 1 star people!. But I totally disagree with what some of them are saying. This is really heavy which cast iron is heavy I know i have Frying pans that are cast iron! They all feel pretty heavy. Then your asking why is the color so different? I will tell you why. This Press isn't seasoned which is a process that involves oil and you coating it and then heating it to high temperatures. I been hearing the more you cook with it the blacker it will get since you really don't cook over hot temperatures with the press it isn't bound to turn black. This will more then likely turn for doing the seasoning process over the years. Warning: Don't take a hot press or any hot cast iron item and put hold water on it it will crack it. You can press flour tortilla and corn tortillas the corn tortillas are a little bit more brittle thats part of the reason for seasoning it will create a Teflon texture and slide it off more gently. Tortillas arent gonna be come out as even with the press they are homemadeb so there is gonna be some differences Take care you all
Customer Review: does what it is supposed to do Summary: 5 Stars
I have had good results with this product but would recommend a good Mexican cookbook (I have Rick Bayless' Mexican Everyday) for instructions on how to make tortillas as the press comes with no recipes or instructions. The first few tortillas from the first batch tore or stuck to the griddle (my fault), but I had very good results with the remainder of the first batch and excellent results the second time around. You will require large freezer storage bags or other food grade plastic sheet to press the masa dough between to avoid sticking. Also, a large cast iron skillet or griddle (I got a very good 2 burner one from Target manufactured by Lodge Logic for about $40) will be required. Except for obvious defects in worksmanship, I do not know how anyone could have complaints with this product. All the press can do is mash a ball of masa to uniform thinness, and this product does exactly that. Producing good tortillas, like most cooking, is a matter of art - that being, in this case, finding just the right combination of heat, time, masa, salt, and water.
