Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Igloo FR180 1.7-Cu-Ft Stainless Steel Door Refrigerator

Customer Review: Gets cold in the back-- REALLY cold
Summary: 2 Stars

For the most part, this refridgerator has done a good job keeping the drinks cold, and the size is reasonable: small on the outside, big on the inside, perfect for the dorm room. The interior is sound and the temperature is very cold, even on the minimum setting.

So why did it lose three stars? Because of one minor flaw, and one serious problem. The minor flaw is that while the fridge keeps the things inside cold, the top and sides get uncomfortably warm. Not enough to set anything on fire, but definitely not the thing you want to put your bare hand on for long. Good if you want to keep lunch warm though.

As for the serious problem-- the pipe in the back gets really, really cold. After running this for three weeks, my mother noticed that the fridge was leaking water. Upon further inspection, I noticed that it wasn't a leak...it was water dripping from MELTING ICE THAT HAD FORMED around one of the pipes in the back of the fridge, just outside of the insulation that had wrapped around the pipe. The chunk was about an inch and a half in diameter, and looked like a chunk of white foam wrapped around the pipe.

It took me 15 minutes to ease the ice off, then as I was inspecting the pipe under the insulating cover, another chunk of ice popped out. All told, it took about 20 minutes to get the mess handled, but I'm glad my mother noticed the water dripping when she did, otherwise, I fear that the fridge might have short circuited and cost us $100 in the process.

EDIT: In regards to the ice--the refridgerator's parts seem to be watertight, so you don't have to worry about the ice harming it. I do recommend that, should you buy this fridge, to either put some foam/insulation around the pipe to reinforce the one already present, or, more simply, just putting a tray under the ice to catch the drips.

Customer Review: damaged door
Summary: 2 Stars

Ordered this item and the door was badly damaged. Returned it, ordered another, didn't arrive until after I had left for vacation. Returned 5 weeks later to find that on the new one the door was also damaged but not as badly so will keep it and stick a metal decal over it. The packaging on this item both times was very poor so the SS door gets sliced and diced. Be prepared to return a few. Amazon was very helpful returning the first one but unfortunately there was not another one in stock. The next one came later than I planned.

Customer Review: Piece of crap!!
Summary: 1 Stars

I got this scrap metal in April of 2009. I had it for 6 months and it conked out. It had the recommended space behind it so it could breathe. It was small and could only fit a few things inside of it. It worked perfectly when I got it. I got it because I had a cast on my leg and was unable to walk into the kitchen to get some water at night. When it conked out, I didn't realize it until I saw water dripping from it. It soaked into my carpet and it started to smell like all hell. I had the rip up that area of carpet and now my carpet looks retard thanks to this scrap metal. When I tried to get it fix, I had to call around for days get the back and forth. The manufacture is in Canada and I had to send it to Buffalo, NY to get it fixed. I also had to pay shipping which was going to be a arm and a leg because it's a bulk item and I had to pay a $35 to get it shipped back when they fixed it. I would not even recommend this scrap metal to a bum on the street that had free electricity! That's how bad this piece of crap is! I ended up getting another Mini frig that is a SPT and was the same price but had a seperate freezer and frig compartment. Hope this review helps out with your decision! DON'T BUY THIS FRIG!

Customer Review: Weird and Strong Chemical Odor Coming From Fridge
Summary: 1 Stars

I just received this fridge last Wednesday for my office and since I plugged it in the moment I received it, it has been emitting a weird and very strong chemical odor. I cleaned the inside and outside of the fridge but it still has the odor. I called the manufacturer the same day and they told me to leave the fridge unplugged for 6 hours. I left it unplugged from Wed-Sun over the Thanksgiving holiday. Today, on Monday, I plugged it in again and it is still emitting the weird and very pugnant chemical smell. Did anyone else experience this problem? If it continues, I will return the product.

Customer Review: quit working and no recourse
Summary: 1 Stars

i purchased this little fridge for my office. after about 8 monthes, it just stopped working. i called amazon, who told be to call igloo, who told me to call curtis international and about 40 minutes later i finally got someone on the phone. i got someone in india who refused to give me an address where i could ship it to until i gave him my credit card info. he kept outlinging charges ($7 for insurance, $35.00 for parts, etc) and wouldn't give me an address until he had my credit card info. i didn't trust him, and i won't buy another igloo or curtis product.
