Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Coffeeduck Classic: Permanent Refillable Coffee Filter for the Senseo models HD7810-HD7812Customer Review: For a really good cup of coffee Summary: 5 Stars
I have read many of the negative review and have to say I am confused by them. I recently purchased the CoffeeDuck. It is great. Does exactly what it is supposed to do. Here is what I have found:
1. Lets be clear, the Senseo is not an expresso machine. Nothing can be done to make it create a true expresso. Now that said, the Senseo is capable of making a really good cup of coffee.
2, When using the Duck you must use expresso grind coffee. Anything coarser will may not yield satisfactory results. I use "danesi" decaffinated expresso coffee. Comes in a round tin much like the "Lily" coffee. It is a very fine grind.
3. I fill my Duck with a scoop which is precisely 29.6 cc of coffee. This is slightly more than two typical coffee single cup coffee measuring cups.
4. I use the top of the Duck as a tamp to flatten and tamp the coffee. I take care to make sure that there are no coffee grounds around the rim of the Duck, but this is not critical as long as one is not overly messy. I place the top onto the grounds then put the Duck into my Senseo.
5. I then use the 2 cup setting on my Senseo to brew the coffee. (Note: if I want to approximate expresso I use the single cup setting on my Senseo with slightly less coffee in the Duck.
The above procedure provides a really tasty, full bodied cup of coffee, consistently. The coffee also has the same foam topping as would be had using the Senseo pods.
All in all, I found this product to be excellent in doing that which it was intended to do when used properly and with the proper coffee grind. I highly recommend this product.
Customer Review: The best refill option for the Senseo Summary: 5 Stars
We began using the Senseo when they first came out in Holland several years ago. The coffee pods were not as expensive there, but I still wanted to be able to use my own coffee, since I home roast. I bought one of the inserts, like the Melitta, to use with my own coffee beans. It worked okay, but occasionally a coffee ground fragment would clog up the pod holder outlet. Evidently some folks have had their boilers explode as a result, if a TV story aired in the UK is to be believed. The newer Senseos have a screen to prevent this kind of failure, but the Coffeeduck doesn't make use of the Senseo pod holder, so this isn't an issue in any case. This device is easier to use than the insert, and pretty easy to clean. My wife still prefers the pods, but I like to be able to choose my own coffee, so I use this gadget quite a bit. I would recommend this product if you want to be able to grind your own beans and use them in a Senseo.
Update, June 7, 2008: I'm still enjoying the Coffee Duck, although I have noticed it sometimes leaks a bit. It also got plugged up once when grounds slipped past the membrane and into the small opening in the bottom of the cup. After cleaning the metal cup and reseating the membrane holder, the plugging problem has not recurred. I also carefully smoothed the outer edge of the plastic cover with a file, and this seemed to help reduce leakage. I wonder if some of the negative experiences have been due to manufacturing defects, where the plastic cover was just too rough to permit a good seal.
Customer Review: Don't be a schmuck, buy the "duck"! Summary: 5 Stars
Using the Coffeeduck is more addictive than smoking quack... er, crack!! I've used Senseo Pods for years now and love the convenience, but hate the insane Zimbabwe-esque prices. I Decided to try making my own pods with some bungee chords, my grandmother's handmade quilt, a wad of bubble gum, and just a little bit o' Yankee Ingenuity. And Voila... catastrophe! My Macguyver-Pods resulted in leaks(the Senseo Machine, not me),shattered dreams of never playing the spoons at Carnegie Hall, and a cornucopia of crummy cups of coffee. A tragedy indeed!
So who can save me from this dastardly situation and give a tasty cup o' joe all at the same time? COFFEEDUCK... That's who!
Seriously, this little gizmo has made the world just a little bit better(just like Funyuns). After reading all the stellar positive Amazon reviews([...]!) I decided to roll up some pennies and take a $[...] dollar risk on the "Duck". This contraption will save you oodles of cash, let you pick the brand of coffee you enjoy(evil, non-conforming, anti-pod genre), and feed even the most ravenous caffeine addiction! This is the best thing that's happened to me since I became the President of the Milli Vanilli Fanclub(and only member)! I don't get out much, but I love me some cappuccino!
If you don't want "fowl" coffee, you're in luck with the "duck"! Mark the "bill" on this "duck"... paid in YUM! You'll be "Daffy" over this "Duck"... ok, enough bad jokes, just buy the thing already, Sheesh!!
Customer Review: Great Product Summary: 5 Stars
I have used my Senseo maker for over two years, I use only steam distilled water in it to avoid getting the siphon tube in the maker clogged, so it still works like new. I have been buying coffee pods by subscription from Amazon, a great and inexpensive way to buy them, however, I wanted stronger coffee, that is not bitter.
I bought the Coffee Duck about 7 months ago and have used it long enough now to know that it works and works well. As the coffee duck recommends, dark roast coffee works best, but other types will work, but be weaker. Starbucks dark espresso or other premium brands work well. I use a lot of coffee in mine (a heaping tablespoon) of xtremely fine espresso grind to get the most flavor out of it. It makes a rich flavorful cup of coffee that is never bitter, in fact, this is about the only way to make coffee that strong that does not get bitter in my 50 plus years of making coffee. It has a thick foam topping as well.
I have never had a problem with leakage, perhaps because my grind is so fine that any crumbs on the edges don't cause a problem. I do have to wait a couple of minutes and be careful not to burn myself with the hot grounds if I wash it right after brewing a cup, which I normally do.
I go thru a pound of coffee in about 2 weeks, so I make several cups a day. My wife likes much weaker coffee and still prefers the prefilled pods. She brews 3 cups from one pod, so its more like colored water.
Customer Review: Outstanding Summary: 5 Stars
We love the coffee Senseo produces, but one after another our favorite pods have been discontinued. Since pods are quite costly, less than satisfactory coffee is unacceptable. I tried Melitta filterpads, MyPod filters, Ecopads, Perfect Pod maker, etc., all with far less than satisfactory results. Finally, I bought a Keurig. Not only are K-Cups pricey (though Amazon has rock-bottom prices on a few brands), and wasteful (all that plastic for disposal), we haven't enjoyed the coffee as much and really missed "crema".
Enter the Coffeeduck filter! Wow! Once ordered (based on reviews here), it arrived promptly. I was prepared to be disappointed (as other products I've tried have been favorably reviewed as well), but was not! This is beautifully designed, extremely easy to fill/empty and rinses clean easily, and produces a wonderful cup of coffee with beautiful crema! I am beyond thrilled. A rounded stainless coffee measure perfectly empties into the filter (with no need to brush grounds away). We're pleased with several Starbucks blends and ask the beans to be ground on the "Extra Fine" setting, though the occasional bag of pre-ground from the supermarket works just fine as well.
The Senseo is not as modern and sleek as other one cup coffee makers, but it makes a really good cup of coffee - with crema - for an economical price. And, with the Coffeeduck filter, ours is back in service and we could not be more pleased.
