Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Ecopad, the Refillable Coffee Filter for the Classic Senseo

Customer Review: Great product if you don't mind the extra work.
Summary: 5 Stars

I do love my Ecopod, but my husband thinks it is not worth the extra trouble. I bought it so that I could use any coffee I wanted and also to save a bit of money. I actually really like the medium and dark Senseo coffee (I find it similar to coffee I have had in Germany) but I sometimes want some variety.

If I pack (90%) my Ecopod with Le Madeleine's French Roast I can get a decent 8 ounce cup of coffee out of it. But what I have found works best is fill the pod, press the 8 ounce button, but only fill your cup with 6 ounces or so. That way I get a reasonable cup of strong coffee. I either turn off the machine after the 6 ounces have come through, or I just stick another cup under it to catch the weak stuff at the end. Either way it works perfectly. You can do this with one medium or dark Senseo pod also.

So I give the Ecopod a 5 star rating. I don't mind washing it out after use. I can then just blot it dry on a towel and I am ready for my next cup. Easier than cleaning the big coffee maker.

Customer Review: New Brown Ecopads work Great!
Summary: 5 Stars

I've been using these with my Senseo coffee maker for about five months now, and I love them. I use the coffee measuring scoop that I used to use for my drip coffee maker, putting a heaping scoop of coffee into the pad and snapping the lid closed. That has turned out to be an ideal amount of coffee: enough to get good pressurization but not so much that the lid is hard to close. Place it in the double cup sized pod holder and you're set. It is great being able to use whatever style and brand of coffee I want, particularly since I love flavored coffees. I've tried them with coffee at regular drip grind and at espresso grind, and both work equally well. I agree with a previous comment that you're going to want more than one package of these. It takes 2 pods to make a mug full of coffee. I fill all my pods at once and store them in an airtight tin so they're ready to go when I am. Quick, easy, less expensive than the pre-made pods, and nothing to throw away except used coffee grounds--which go straight to the garden.

Customer Review: Works Really Well
Summary: 5 Stars

I've used the pod for 8 months now and I was very happy to finally be able to use my other coffees. The pad has endured very well, considering I stuffed it more than once.

As I've used up all of my ground coffee and am buying whole beans, the current trick has been finding the right grind setting. I know it's not very fine grind (as in Starbucks Turkish grind), because it takes 2 pushes of the 8 oz button to fill an 8oz mug. I ended up barely tamping down the very fine coffee to get a better water flow through the 1.5 tablespoon capacity pod; the coffee was still okay and the frothy head returned. The grind can't be course either as the coffee will only turn out to be coffee water, so I'm guessing it should be above very fine. I know the Senseo coffee grind is probably a little above fine, but wonder if a different coffee has to be finer in order to get a full flavor from the coffee.

1/05/10 I use this item once in the morning and clean it every day and I'm still on the first one.

Customer Review: Super Product

New Improved Brown Ecopad, the Refillable Coffee Filter for the SenseoThis cute little gizmo is ideal for those of us who want to escape the tyranny of overpriced, pre-fab, Senseo pods. Easy to fill and clean (Dishwasher safe - oh please! Like we can't just rinse it out ourselves?) No magic here: just fill with a scoop of fine or espresso grind, snap on the top, then BAM- lots of foam, and all your favorite beans to choose from - NO complaints here! I can't grind it fine enough with my burr grinder, but grinding it at the market or buying it ground to my specs at Uncommon Grounds, our local coffee shop, is still cheaper than Senseo pods. I bought two pkgs of Eco Pods, 2 pods/pkg, so I always have a full one ready to go, even on the weekends when I guzzle a LOT of espresso. (NOTE: eco pods fit my deluxe model Senso, many other refillable pods won't) This product will pay for itself in a short time. Love it!

Customer Review: Save money and use your favorite coffee!
Summary: 5 Stars

We got the Senseo coffee machine for Christmas and love the coffee it makes, but hate the price of the disposable coffee pods (and we don't like the flavor of them either). I found these reuseable Ecopads on the internet and have been using them for a couple of weeks with our coffee maker. We love them! We can use our favorite coffee and it saves a ton of money. If you drink coffee like we do, you'll save more than the price of the Ecopad within a few weeks by being able to use normal coffee beans instead of the way-overpriced disposable coffee pods. For our particular coffee, grinding the beans at the finest setting gets the best flavor and also produces the distinctive foam head on the coffee. A medium grind did not produce the thick foam for us. We're going to buy more of these so we can fill them all, keep them in a ziplock, and be able to brew numerous cups at a time before having to wash out and refill the filters. This is a must-have for Senseo coffee machine owners.
