Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Ecopad, the Refillable Coffee Filter for the Classic Senseo

Customer Review: works great
Summary: 5 Stars

After reading the reviews, I decided to try these, since I wasn't too thrilled with either the cost or quality of the senseo pods. After getting my three sets in the mail, I went to my grocery store, bought the Starbucks Sumatra whole beans, ground them to expresso grind, and went to try the ecopads. I followed the instructions, put the ecopad in the machine (perfect fit), hit the 8oz button, and wa - la! I would challenge anyone to tell the difference between the stuff you pay $3.50 a cup for at Starbucks. I'm definately hooked. I can't see how other reviewers have had problems with these. They are easy to fill, and fit perfectly in the machine. They are a bit messy to clean up, but its a fair trade off for the awesome coffee and the cost savings over the pods or actually going to starbucks. I would estimate I will get 50-60 cups out of a $6 store bought bag of coffee. Basically, one heaping teaspoon fills up the ecopad perfectly. Also I would estimate getting hundreds of uses out of each ecopad - they seem very durable. I am looking forward to trying different coffee's with these. Well worth the tiny investment!

Customer Review: These pods work perfectly
Summary: 5 Stars

I have used these pods, both the original and "improved," and I find that if you use a fine grind of any coffee they will produce a perfect cup with rich thick foam. You can even re-grind coffee that is ground for drip coffee makers. I have 12 of them and keep them on a little tray for drying out after rinsing. Don't use them wet. After brewing a cup I immediately rinse all sides of both parts of the pod maker and then set them out to dry. I fill them almost to the top and then "tamp" the container lightly with my fore finger and finish by brushing off any grounds from the edge of the lip. If this sounds complicated or a hassle, it is really not and the pods are very forgiving. Just try to make sure they are full, but not so full that you can't push the lid on securely.

After a year and a half, I have never had a single problem with these pods. People who experience clear water flowing through are either using a coarse grind or they have not "packed" the pod at all. The utility of these pods is such that I have used coffees ranging from Maxwell House (re-ground) to Kona whole bean coffee.

If you have a Senseo machine, this is a great product! You can make your own coffee or tea pods using the product of your choice. Good for the environment and much more economical than buying pre-made pods. We use our Ecopad primarily for making tea. It works very well with all loose teas; just be sure to leave adequate space for the tea leaves to expand when they get wet. Don't pack it tight- I usually find a heaping teaspoon that covers the bottom of the Ecopad is sufficient. My husband also uses the bottom half of the Ecopad as a way of accomodating some of the slightly larger gourmet coffee pods (such as Timothy's, etc.) By putting the pre-filled coffee pod into the Ecopad bottom (don't put the top on!) and using the 2cup pod holder that comes with the machine, you will eliminate the leaking that sometimes occurs when using different brands of pods that don't fit the machine exactly right. We've had our Ecopads for almost a year now with no problems. We wash them in the dishwasher- either in the utensil holder on the bottom or on the top rack inside the covered accessory basket.

Customer Review: Can't stop talking about it to friends with disposables, I'm in LOVE.

Fantastic product!! Works great. If you're thinking about this or a coffee duck, I can bet you the duck's not worth the extra $$, although I haven't tried one.

EDIT: I have been using my EcoPads every day for 7 months now, and like them so much I wanted to come back and say so. If you are using disposable coffee pods and are considering switching over, I highly recommend it!

Tips for use: Alternate between the two pads and you will always have a dry pad to fill. Filling a wet one is harder. Leave it on the dish rack until tomorrow.

Turning it into an art? Spoon in espresso, tap the side of the pad with the spoon a few times to create an even fill, then pat down the espresso gently with the spoon. Repeat the process, and finally, use the handle of the spoon to level off the top. Snap on the top of the pad, and brush off any grounds that got on the outside. Total process takes about 15 seconds and can be done while still sleepwalking. Creates a very even fill that the Senseo pumps water through at a good pressure.

Customer Review: Fantastic Replacement for Overpriced Coffee Pods
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm a snob. I'm a coffee snob. Not the biggest, but I admit it. I hate the MAJORITY of pre-filled coffee pods, and I hate the PRICE even more.

I like a good grind of coffee, nice and strong, fresh ground of course. I buy by mail order from clubcaffeine.net, this is probably not the BEST coffee, but it's local to the SF Bay area, Organic, and Fair Trade, and DAMN GOOD.

You fill these little pods with your own cuppa grind and then plug it into the Senseo. Newer models of Senseo have a modified hopper to prevent these from being used. You can get around this by cutting the plastic nib from the bottom of the ecopad. I have a friend into coffee more then me, I got him a newer Senseo, ran into the modified hopper thought for about a minute, then cut the nibs off... PERFECT CUP OF COFFEE.

Takes about two of these to make a nice strong cup, you can get espresso roast and that is more flexible. A big cup helps if you like mixers as the Senseo has measured drips, and after 2 a regular cup is mostly full.
