Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Ecopad, the Refillable Coffee Filter for the Classic Senseo

Customer Review: A great way to save money on pod coffee!
Summary: 5 Stars

Wow - why did I wait so long to buy these? I've used a Senseo coffeemaker for several years and love it - but the pods are not always that easy to find. Target used to have their own line of pods that they discontinued. And if I did find them at stores it was often a very minimal selection of flavours and up to $5.69 per package.

Just tried my new refillable pods and it came out PERFECT! Here's my pro's and con's:

PRO's

- unlimited in the flavours and types of coffee you can use
- coffee comes out with the crema on top just like the Senseo pods
- far cheaper than buying the Senseo pods
- refillable pod is very easy to clean
- seems quite durable - I read another's review they've had theirs for a couple of years
- comes as set of two (see below why you want two)

CON's

- since the refillable pod has to be used in the two cup pod holder you can only brew one small cup at a time. So you'd need to fill two refillable pods to make a larger cup of coffee each time
- the fact you need to clean out the refillable pod. We Senseo users are used to jump dumping out used pods. NOTE: what till it cools!

All in all - extremely pleased. A few seconds to clean out the refillable pods is well worth it for the variety in flavours of coffee I can now try and the huge savings over purchased pods.

Customer Review: Priceless little gadgets.
Summary: 5 Stars

I read the reviews for these not only on Amazon, but other spots on the net, and was taken with the vast discrepency between reviews... some said they were wonderful, some said they were useless. I bought two sets, for a total of four. Keeping in mind the advice to slightly pack the coffee, and to make sure all loose coffee is removed from the outside, they work flawlessly from the very first.
I used Gevalia decaf mild roast, as my ecopads arrived when I got home from work... too late for regular. I re-ground the coffee so it was very fine, and filled my first DIY pod using a soup spoon, and tamped it lightly when full, then added just a tad more. I then snapped it shut, tapped off any loose coffee granules, and brewed it using the two cup pod holder and the two cup, or mug, button of my Senseo. (Note: I used to use a Melitta one-to-one, these will not work with it... the Melitta pods are smaller)
The resulting cup of coffee was just wonderful... foam (or creama) included. It was just exactly what I was hoping for. Cleanup was to tap gently in the trash can and the hockey puck of spent coffee fell out... a quick rinse and I'm done.
I will be buying several more and use them not in place of pods, but as an addition when I want a special coffee. Follow the instructions and they are flawless.

Customer Review: Save Money Plus Enjoy Great Coffee With EcoPad
Summary: 5 Stars

I originaly ordered just two of these to try out for a few weeks to see if I liked them. I liked them so much I gave one to a friend of mine to try also. Both of us have had very good luck using them. I have experimented with differant brands of Coffee to see which I like best I for the most part love a full flavor coffee so after about 2 months of using them I will stick with the expresso beans. I am buying the type at the grocery store where you can grind your own. I have also tried different grinds and the one that works best is the expresso grind which is very fine. The grinders that I am using have two grinds for espresso I use the coarser of the two. This works great without any problems at all.

I don't pack the coffee in the ecopads I just fill them and level it off with the back of the spoon I am using. If you try to pack the coffee to tightly you machine may not finish brewing with shutting off first.

The only downsides verses using the Senseo pods are, the Ecopads are a bit messy as you have to wipe the counter off after filling the pads. That is the one thing I like more about the Senseo pods.

If you would like to save money on coffee this is a great product.

Customer Review: Better than Expected
Summary: 5 Stars

I was hoping this would provide at least some functionality so that I could use coffees other than pre-manufactured pods. I found that not only could I do that, but it's quite easy as well.

I'm not sure why there have been negative comments about this product being "messy" or "difficult to use". Then again, I haven't used paper filters for years so I am very used to dumping grounds down the garbage disposal. I find these easy to clean, quick to dry, and a snap to fill and use.

I ordered two 2-packs and I'm glad I did, because I use 4 a day and don't have to worry about whether they've fully dried. The grind you use makes a HUGE difference in the way the pod brews - you will get as much, or even more "crema", if you use a very find grind. This will also make a robust cup of coffee! not at all weak. Comments that it is weak or watery again point to using too coarse a grind. The instructions say to use the 2-pod holder but select "one cup". I find, however, that is a little too strong and either use 2 cups and let a small amount dribble off, or don't quite fill the pod and use the one cup setting. Both approaches work well for me.

Overall, highly recommended. For me the obvious choice over the "MyPod".

Customer Review: A little pricy, but a great product.
Summary: 5 Stars

I have been using my Senseo and Ecopads for about 6 months now, and consider both of them worth every penny. At first it seemed rather inconvenient to clean out the filters each time, but I have the routine down fairly well now - by the time I empty and clean the old filter and fill up the new one, the Senseo has warmed up and is ready to brew.

It took a little trial and error to get the hang of filling the filter just right, so that each cup comes out perfectly. I found that filling it very loosely (no packing) results in my flavored coffee coming out nice and foamy, and very rich. I also only fill my 8oz mug up about 3/4 of the way as the last part of the coffee seems to come out weak.

Since I'm very particular about which coffee I drink, and I haven't found any pre-packaged pods that I like, the Ecopad seemed necessary. I'm glad to say that it works like a charm. I can have a cup of coffee ready (cleaning and filling a filter and everything) before the regular coffee maker has even finished brewing - and mine tastes a lot better too!

After 6 months, my Ecopads are still holding up nicely - they were well worth the money spent.
