Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Microwave Egg Poacher

Customer Review: Many flaws
Summary: 1 Stars

I don't understand the raves for this. Wanting to improve on the `Progressive' brand of poacher, We bought 4 of these, based on the many cheers here, and were very disappointed. First issue: if you're using anything but the smallest supermarket egg, the egg plus the requisite bit of water nearly overflows the poaching cavity, so it's very easy to spill some on the way to the microwave door. Second, the slider one uses to close the poacher before microwaving doesn't move freely, so while holding the poacher nearly overflowing with raw egg, you must force its stubborn slider to the closed position before cooking, creating another spill risk. The slider on one of these units actually fell apart after only 3 uses. And finally, while it looks this would be easy to clean, it's not; there are a few small crevices on the edge of the cavity, and we spent far too much time picking bits of cooked egg out of those spots with a toothpick.

The eggs themselves actually tasted better than with the other poachers we've tried -- but the frustration of dealing with the poor design has made that not a good tradeoff.

Customer Review: Didn't work for me
Summary: 1 Stars

Like another reviewer, I don't understand the raves about this product. This egg poacher didn't work for me. As another reviewer stated, the cups are too small for large eggs plus the water you're supposed to add. Within a few seconds of starting the microwave, both cups were leaking. And although I pierced the egg yolks, they both exploded. I had set the microwave according to the chart that comes with the poacher, but had to shut it off before the end of the cycle due to the noise and mess. What was left of the eggs turned out like rubber and they were, of course, over cooked. The eggs were stuck in the cups. After scraping the eggs out, there was a lot of egg white stuck in the cups. As another reviewer stated, the plastic isn't the easy cleanup stated. This egg poacher is going in the recycle bin but I don't even know if it's recyclable, I found no recycle symbol. After I buy a poacher insert (I recently lost my old one), I'm going back to poaching my eggs using a pan of water and a egg poacher insert.

Customer Review: HORRIBLE!
Summary: 1 Stars

I love poached eggs, but they are not the easiest thing to make. I saw this item at my grocery store and thought it would be great to make poached eggs quickly with little mess. But, this contraption was a nightmare. I followed the directions and I watched the little white case pop around in my microwave for a minute and when I opened up, I had little egg splatters all over my microwave and inside the white case was a mess of egg bits that was nothing even close to poached! I'm throwing this thing away and not wasting any more eggs on it. It didn't work and I ended up with a much bigger mess than had I taken out a pot and done it the proper way.

Customer Review: egg poacher
Summary: 1 Stars

The egg poacher is not what it's "cracked up" to be! Following directions still caused it to open while cooking in the microwave. Also, the shipping costs exceeded the cost of the poacher!
