Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Frigidaire FAK124R1V 12,000-BTU Slider/Casement Air Conditioner with Electronic ControlsCustomer Review: adequate but could be improved Summary: 3 StarsThis A/C unit meets my expectations based on the product description but it could be improved. In my case it is installed in a bedroom sliding window where it provides ample cooling for that room. The built-in fan isn't powerful enough to push the cool air into other rooms but with the help of a floor standing fan I get reasonable cooling of another bedroom and the living room as well. It will never be a substitute for central A/C but in a rental apartment, there is no option to install central A/C or even the ductless mini-split systems that would otherwise be preferable. I expect this A/C unit would be very well suited for cooling a large open room such as a living/dining area where it doesn't need to push cool air through doorways or around corners.
The digital control panel and remote control are decent but the timer function is quite primitive. There is no recurring or 24 hour timer. Its annoying that the timer has to be set manually every day. And the timer can only do one thing at a time. Either it can be set to turn on after the set number of hours, or it can be set to turn off after the set number of hours, but it cannot be configured for both on and off timers simultaneously.
Installation was pretty straightforward and took less than 90 minutes but the unit is quite heavy so be prepared for that. I'd recommend downloading the instruction/installation manuals from the manufacturer's website prior to purchasing so that you know what to expect. Other than that, the energy usage can be quite high if the unit is running 24/7 at a low temperature - in my case it more than doubled my monthly bill. I will need to find that balance between comfort/cost. Also, while this unit doesn't require it's own dedicated 20A circuit, it is possible to overload a circuit if you run this unit and one or more other high powered devices (hair dryer, iron, etc) on the same circuit. If you go much higher than 12,000 BTU you'll probably need a dedicated circuit.
My only other complaint is one that applies to all A/C manufacturers - the casement/slider air conditioners always seem to cost a lot more than the horizontal air conditioners. Surely the cost of manufacturing isn't that much different that they can justify a 50-100% higher retail price.
My unit was delivered by a third party shipping company (CEVA). I had no problems with them. They called and scheduled a delivery time with me and delivered when they said they would.

How to Choose a Room Air Conditioner Compared to large capacity central units, room air conditioners have several advantages. The initial cost of a room air conditioning unit is significantly lower than the cost of central air. Because room air conditioners are designed for cooling small spaces, operating costs are reduced. And, room air conditioners can provide personalized temperature and humidity controls that central systems cannot. Calculating Cooling Capacity Cooling capacity is the critical factor in properly selecting a room air conditioner. Cooling capacity is measured in British Thermal Units (BTUs) and typical models will range in capacity from 5,000 BTUs to 28,500 BTUs. Choosing an undersized unit will overwork the unit and it will not cool properly. Choosing an oversized unit will cost more to buy and operate and it will not dehumidify properly. We can help you to calculate capacity.
