After trying a hand slicer, getting sweaty doing so, and cutting my thumb--it was time to take a different approach.
This slicer cuts cheese like magic with little to no physical effort required. What a relief from trying to cut up those giant blocks of cheese from Costco with a knife or hand slicer.
After you create your first stack of slices, the slicer has no problem cutting back through the stack to make halves or quarters, whatever your preference.
It looks nice and is heavier than expected. And for eight bucks, you really can't go wrong here.
Unlike some other reviewers, my slicer and wire came intact, ready to go out-of-the-box, with the two replacements attached to the bottom.

We are so happy with this item! It works great, cutting cheese is so quick using this, which sounds silly b/c cutting cheese is such a simple thing, but let me tell you, this is the second non-handheld slicer we've tried, and the other one (by Progressive International: http://www.amazon.com/Progressive-International-Slicing-Cheese-Keeper/dp/B001CEIRF8/ref=sr_1_15?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1244819777&sr=8-15) had a blade that was way too thick -- made slicing difficult and time consuming, if you can imagine (though as a thing to store cheese in, it worked just fine). This slicer works great, had a great price, is easy to clean, comes with TWO replacement wires, and also looks nice, in my opinion. I got this slicer when I got sick of trying to get knives through soft monteray jack cheese and big Costco-sized blocks of hard, extra-old cheddar. After a bit of research on Amazon I bought this one based on the reviews - and boy am I glad that I did! This slices through every cheese I can throw at it. This saves me time, and, more importantly, my sanity! I highly recommend this slicer and am keeping it in mind as I prepare my shopping list of Christmas presents!Customer Review: works for small blocks of cheese

This is great slicer for small blocks only. It will not cut a standard 5 pound loaf of cheese (4x4 slice) unless you push the cheese through the wire vertically instead of bringing the wire down on it.
It is very heavy and makes cutting a block of cheese pretty effortless - much better than the handheld wire and roller style.
To store the extra wires, I unscrewed the handle and pushed the wires down each end of the metal arm.

I bought this for my sons, who love cheese and were always asking me to slice it for them. I have three boys under the age of 10 and not much lasts very long in my house, they break everything. I got them this cheese slicer around Christmas and four months later it is still going, getting used often. They've taken it apart and we've put it back together and it still works great. Easy for the little guys to use. Very high durability for the price.
