Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of FoodSaver V3835 Vacuum Food Sealer with SmartSeal Technology, Silver/BlackCustomer Review: Significant Improvement Over My Old FoodSaver Summary: 5 Stars
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
For years I have I owned and used the FoodSaver model V835. Unlike many of the reviewers who loved their old models, I struggled to get the bag to stay in the vacuum channel. It seemed that no matter how hard I tried, or how deeply the bag was shoved into the channel, as soon as I closed the lid, it would pop out and slide backward making it impossible to vacuum and seal. Over the years, I wasted hours trying to coddle that blasted machine searching for its sweet spot, which I never found. Because of that, I didn't use my FoodSaver on a daily basis, instead storing it in the basement and dragging it upstairs a couple of times a year for mammoth preserving projects. I would never get rid of it because the vacuum seal, when I could get it to work, was fabulous and the food, particularly meat, stayed so fresh.
Now, given the number of bad reviews on this updated model I expected to encounter the same problems only now housed in a more stylish chassis. So, it was a great surprise to discover that this FoodSaver is a vast improvement over my old one and I had no problem at all shoving the open end into the channel, each and every time. The bugs may have been worked out from the earlier release of this unit because it worked flawlessly. Note that the unit is packaged with 3, one quart and 2, one gallon size bags along with a 11 inch wide, 10 foot long roll for making custom bags. The roll stores neatly inside the unit. The bags and rolls are readily available here, on the website and in most retailers. I usually find the best prices for them at warehouse stores.
To make the test for the new unit a challenge, I used pre-sealed bags - bags that I'd used once before and washed (do not re-use bags that held meat or greasy items.) The bag material on used bags tends to curl in both directions on the open end. I sealed some candy, a hunk of cheese, and pricey almond meal. It is astounding that after years of seeing the channel in plain view and being unable 4 out of 5 tries to get the bag to stay put, I can blindly shove the bag through a slot and it automatically senses the bag and starts the vacuum seal.
I also used the Seal/Stop button to seal sandwich rolls for freezing. That button provided precise control to stop the vacuum and begin the sealing process before the bread was crushed.
The built in vacuum hose for use with the canisters and quick marinator is a significant improvement over the old model. It is located on the front panel, pulls out easily and retracts back into place. I've owned FoodSaver canisters for years but never used them because my touchy machine wasn't worth keeping in a handy location, but with this new model sitting on my counter I promptly filled the canisters with prescription dog food and coffee beans. Now I can vacuum seal them after each use with no effort, keeping both items as fresh as possible.
The stainless steel finish stays fingerprint free with a quick wipe from a microfiber cloth, which also works well on the black parts of the unit. And, although I am familiar with FoodSaver, I took the time to read the manual from cover to cover and watched a brief video tutorial on the website (address is printed on material included with the machine) highlighting features of the system. I found the material easy to understand the equipment easy to use.
I am delighted with this well thought out, space-saving, user friendly model of the FoodSaver. It accomplishes everything my older model failed to do, and more.
Update 11/25/2010: The performance of the new FoodSaver remains stellar -- absolutely flawless. Not one bag sealing issue. I packed up two bushels of roasted green chilies in August and finished the task quickly without incident. Previously, this was a job I dreaded and was always an exercise in frustration. Now that I have an efficiently working vacuum sealer, I find more and more uses for it. A couple of weeks ago, before the holiday rush started, I made four different batches of Christmas cookie dough which I sealed and froze for baking next month. This is a tool that has genuine value in my kitchen.
