Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Fasta Pasta The Microwave Cooker

Customer Review: Who Would Have Thought?
Summary: 5 Stars

I can't believe how much I love this product! I was fully skeptical, but decided to give it a try based on the excellent reviews. I live alone and dread lugging out the big pot to cook just one serving of spaghetti (my arthritis doesn't appreciate it either). I am pleased to report that product is as advertised! It absolutely cooks the pasta perfectly every time. You will have to tweak it for your microwave, and for mine, I've discovered that 15-16 minutes is just about right. You don't microwave it with the lid on...the lid is for straining only. I am just amazed. I was just sure I'd have a starchy, glued together mess, but NO! The pasta was completely separated and not at all starchy. No boil-over, no heavy pot to lift & cart to the sink to strain. I love it so much, I ordered one for my son, sister, mom and best friend! I found the measuring gauge on the lid to be accurate for one serving. I'm thrilled that there will be no more pot watching, stirring, boil-overs or stuck together pasta for me. I like being free to concentrate on the sauce or topping(s) while the pasta cooks to perfection in the microwave. This one is a definite winner!
**Update** All my gift recipients are absolutely thrilled with their Fasta Pasta cookers! My mother advises that her microwave takes exactly 13 minutes for perfectly cooked spaghetti, and my sister reports that they have had pasta four times in the last week because she loves using this thing so much!

Customer Review: Time Saver and Works Great
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the first time I've taken the time to write a review for anything I've purchased from Amazon. I live alone and teach music for a living. My schedule gets me out of the door about 1:00 pm and back home between 10-10:30 pm. After suffering a heart attack a few years back I've been doing my best to eat healthier (no processed foods, everything cooked from scratch). I have a great 15 minute pasta sauce recipe from Cook's Illustrated that's fast and tasty but pulling out the big pot, filling it up, waiting for the water to boil, dropping the pasta and waiting for it to finish really meant that this was something I had to prepare in advance and reheat when I got home. Not anymore. I've owned this Fasta-Pasta maker for over 4 months now and I highly recommend it. I measure out the pasta, put in the water, drop in the pasta, put it in the microwave and set it for 15 minutes. While it's cooking away I make my sauce and both are done at the same time. A healthy meal in a short amount of time with minimal clean-up. It absolutely works as advertised. If it disappeared I would immediately purchase another. The first time you use it you may have to adjust the suggested cooking time (the instructions said 12 minutes for one serving - I found 15 minutes is the right time for my microwave). If your are cooking for one or two - buy it, you won't be disappointed.

Customer Review: Just Ordered Two More! Great Stuff!
Summary: 5 Stars

Being of Italian descent, I travel to Italy every year, and pasta is a staple in our family. I was tempted with this product and its great reviews, but skeptical. Just used mine for the first time yesterday and couldn't believe it actually cooked my pasta perfectly, al dente (mushy pasta is the worst)! I just ordered one for my Italian father and my daughter at college. I haven't tried it yet, but it claims to cook rice, potatoes and other vegetables too. I'm satisfied with the pasta results, and that alone is worth it for me. Don't tell my cousins in Italy that I cooked pasta in the microwave...they may not let me in the door next time! :-)

UPDATE: I've bought about 8 of these for family and friends! Here are a few hints: Spaghetti cooks perfectly with no need to stir, but if you cook other shaped pastas, stir after 5 AND 10 minutes(twice). The directions say to stir after 7-10 minutes, but they have already begun to stick together by then. When making french fries, I first put my potatoes in the Fasta Pasta, with water, cook for about 5 minutes and drain. This gives them a head start and the time in the oven is considerable less. My daughter's roommate loves to use this to make Kraft Mac N Cheese. After draining, she puts all the other ingredients in the Pasta Fasta and all is done in this one container. That's it!

Customer Review: Rice and veggies, too
Summary: 5 Stars

Yes, the pasta comes out perfectly and a tiresome task is now satisfying and easy, but this unit also works for rice and vegetables. 1/2 cup of Uncle Ben's and water to line 1, plus 15 minutes in my 900 watt microwave produced perfectly cooked rice--better in fact, than my electric rice cooker. Brown rice takes longer and benefits from a stir, but also works.

The leaflet that comes with the unit has recipes for potatoes and broccoli. I have tried the broccoli and again, was very pleased. About 1 cup of broccoli, water to line 1 and 12 minutes delivered perfectly steamed (and nicely green) broccoli. This is different from what the recipe leaflet says since that is for salad and I was making a dinner vegetable. The Fasta Pasta is a multitasker that would make Alton Brown proud.

The greatest advantage I've found to this product is that I can easily and quickly make perfect small servings. Using regular means, I tend to make too much, be it pasta or rice, because I feel I have to maximize the effort and time involved. Unfortunately, I either overeat or find the leftovers growing in the back of the fridge--neither are good options. Being able to quickly and painlessly make only a little is as much an advantage to my perpetual diet as the process is to simple meal preparation. This thing is great.

Customer Review: It actually works!
Summary: 5 Stars

This isn't the first product that I've purchased based on the strenght of Amazon reviews, but it is the most "gimmicky." But on the slim chance that it could work, I was willing to give it a go because I absolutely loathe cooking pasta. Now don't get me wrong...I love to eat it...it's the cooking that I can't stand. The constant wait and taste, wait and taste, wait and taste...and then I invariably wait too long and end up with mush. Ack! I dreamed of something that I could just set into motion, put some sauce on low, then pick up around the house or get a little work done in the office until it was time to eat. Now I have my wish. Pasta is now so convenient that I'm experimenting with my own sauces, trying some new recipes, and just looking forward to cooking with it. My only complaint about the product, and it's a minor one, is that the strainer isn't as efficient as it could be. Because of the design of the lid, a bit of water gets easily trapped at the bottom of the strainer and can't exit because it's either hung up around the lip of the lid and clinging to dear life or because it can't reach the first slot in order to exit. As a result, you get about two tablespoons or so of water if you dump directly to your plate. If you're like me and don't like the excess water, a quick drop in a colander does the trick.
