I normally reach for paint or colored pencils when I'm doing my art. I like doing black and white works as well, but it was never very practical. (pencils get finger prints everywhere, charcoal smudges like crazy, acrylic dries way too quickly, and oil takes forever and a day to dry.)
Then I found these pens.
The ink is smooth, and layers well. They range from a solid black to a pale gray for when you need just a hint of shadow in the lighter areas. The brush tips are flexible without being wishy-washy and give enough firmness that it really feels brush like. You have control over switching from thin to thick and back to thin in one line.
And finally, these pens have a minimal leakage into the backs of paper. In one of my works I wanted an area to be just a tiny shade darker than the object next to it. So I layered it three times. When I was done with my character I flipped it over to see if I had stained my table. I had one very small leak smaller than the size of my pinky nail and barely spotting through at that.
I would feel comfortable using these pens in art class.
