Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Escali Primo Digital Multifunctional Food Scale, Chrome

Customer Review: Great, inexpensive scale
Summary: 5 Stars

This scale has been great. I've actually used it for a lot more things than I thought I would need it for when I bought it... I've weighed everything from yarn (to figure out yardage used), for mail, and of course food. It's been handy. Easy to use and I think really accurate.

Customer Review: Very Happy so far, don't understand the negative reviews?
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought the white color (P115W) at my local hardware store (not via Amazon) since the price without free shipping was roughly the same and sometimes I feel like supporting my local merchants. I do not understand the negative reviews though I've only had this a short time so check back in a couple of months to see if I've changed my opinion.

One of the complaints is that the lock/tab on the battery cover breaks off. I don't understand this since the tab seems to be plenty robust and only requires the smallest amount of force to open the cover -- maybe if you really pushed the tab in it would break, but you do not need to do this to get the cover off -- so don't. The read out is plenty bright and big enough to see without needing to put on my reading glasses. The scale is packaged in foam padding which I've kept and used when storing the scale.

Another complaint was about the scale being inaccurate. You can check the calibration using US denomination coins. I've done this and the scale is right on.

Cent - 2.5 grams
Nickel - 5 grams
Dime - 2.27 grams
Quarter - 5.67 grams
Half Dollar - 11.34 grams
Dollar (SBA) - 8.1 grams

If there is anything on the scale when you power it on then this causes the scale '0' point to be set to the weight of the object (this is the "TARE" feature). When the object is removed you'll get a negative reading on the scale. Also the scale must be on a level and stable surface, and not used next to an operating appliance which could cause an electromagnetic disturbance (like a radio or microwave oven).

Customer Review: Didn't work properly
Summary: 2 Stars

After I took this scale out of the box and inserted the batteries the scale worked properly until I turned it off and then back on. It then displayed some gobbledygook until I moved the scale around or turned it over a few times after which it would work properly again until it was turned off and on. Every time I turned it on it would do the same thing. I then called Escali and, to their credit, the representative very pleasantly said it was defective and asked me simply to submit a warranty claim on their website rather than return it to Amazon and they would send me a new scale. I promptly did this and they didn't respond, so I e-mailed them again after a week or so to ask what was happening with my claim. Still I never heard back from them, so after about three weeks I just returned it to Amazon as defective. I wouldn't recommend this scale or any Escali product based on my experience with their poor customer service. Too bad, because the scale, when it was working properly, seemed to do a good job. Caveat emptor - avoid Escali products.

Customer Review: Great Digital Scale
Summary: 5 Stars

Very sensitive -- will weigh very small amounts. The "tare" function is indispensable. Good price for a good scale.

Customer Review: Faster, more convenient, and the longer life of AA batteries
Summary: 5 Stars

This scale replaces and older model Escali that used a 9 volt battery. My wife uses the scale twice a day to measure out food for our three dogs. I use it for cooking. The old scale would frequently need a new battery - preceded by a loss of accuracy - most irritating.

This scale settles instantly, doesn't shut down in the middle of multiple uses, and always remembers your choice of measurement.

For me the major improvement is the change to AA batteries. Compared to the old 9 volt, the two AA's last four times as long. The low battery indicator works, and has eliminated the frustration from inconsistent readings with a low battery.

Yes the display window is less tilted toward the user, but the scale is very tolerant of shifting the weight to the rear with no loss of accuracy.

I give it five stars for accuracy, battery life, convenience, style, and real value.
