I've had this kettle for 3 years and it still works great. No problem here. It finally has a little mineral build up on the bottom but I am going to try vinegar to take it off when it gets worse. Really everything works as intended, no smells or problems with the top, and I use it many time a day. The only issue I have is some of the "non-slip coating" has come off the handle. This is only cosmetic and hasn't change the function in any way. Although I think I'm not suppose to, I keep it plugged in and on the ready all the time. Never know when I need more tea. Also, I love that I can see the level of the water. I often fill it to max or sometimes slightly more than max, by accident, and have never had a spill. I do reccommend this pot.
