I had been meaning to get a kitchen scale for years, but they were always too big, too expensive, whatever. My brother told me he had just purchased this and recommended it most highly, so I decided to order one. It has a capacity of 11+ pounds, so it is great for precision baking - I have always baked naturally-leavened bread strictly by "feel", and I can now duplicate and refine my successes MUCH more accurately (and avoid re-learning my less-successful attempts). Anyone that uses flour as an ingredient knows that trying to measure *volume* is skewed by how densely packed the material is. This is further compounded by humidity changes, as dryer flour will sift differently than when conditions are humid. I have had great results with this.
It is extremely simple to use: put an empty container on the scale, press the ON button, it automatically "zeroes" the weight of the container, and then you fill the container while watching the scale readout, which is very large and easy to read.
I have also been using it for precision coffee brewing - I like the Aerobie 80R08 AeroPress Coffee and Espresso Maker for "espresso-like" coffee, and the "Auto Tare" function of this scale works great for getting a precise coffee-water ratio. If you place any *filled* container on the scale, press the ON button, then empty the container and replace it on the scale, the weight of the contents will show up as negative number - no NEED to do any subtraction, very SIMPLE! You can use any container that sits on top of the scale - I have used everything from 18" mixing bowls to small ceramic cups. It also has an automatic 60-second power-off feature to minimize power usage - very efficient.
This unit is very well constructed, extremely accurate, grams, Kg, ounces, and pounds can be selected at any point during the process. The best part of all of this is that when I opened the box, I was surprised by how something this useful had such a small footprint on my counter. I try to keep things uncluttered, and I did not want anything large on the counter all the time. This unit is perfect - it is unobtrusive, accurate, attractively designed, and simple to use. Add the low price and you've got a GREAT deal - if you are considering a kitchen scale, you can't go wrong with this.
