Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of EatSmart Digital Nutrition Scale - Professional Food and Nutrient Calculator

Customer Review: I love this scale!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I have owned diet scales before but never one that calculates a food's calories at the same time. First and foremost I wanted a scale that was very accurate. Because this one was recommended by well-known weight control programs, I assumed it had to be very accurate and of good quality. And it is. Honestly, prior to receiving the scale, I wasn't sure if the "food counting" aspect would be useful or just an extra feature I would ignore. Now, I don't use my computer diet tracking or calorie counting books at all. I only use this scale. It is by far the best one I've ever owned. I eat a lot of whole foods so this scale is ideal for my diet. It is sooo much faster and easier than either using a calorie book, or the computer diet programs where you keep a computerized food log and have to look up each food, then type in the amount you have measured to get the calories and nutrition info. It is intuitive and super quick to use the code book and measure the food. It is also really helpful to see in real time how many calories a portion is just by placing it on the scale- allowing you to quickly add and subtract amounts of food to get the number of calories you want. (I'm not sure if I'm explaining this right, but you will know what I mean when you use the scale.) It definately beats trying to do it in reverse by measuring the food then looking up the calories. I never thought a scale would inspire me to stick to my diet, but this one has. I actually look forward to measuring my meals with it! Not only has really helped me meet my daily calorie goals, but using the scale has made my diet choices more flexible. And I'm learning alot about the nutrition and portion sizes of the food choices I make. I have not used the more advanced features like entering custom foods or the "additive" feature- it's just faster and easier to me to weigh each food separately then add the calories up myself. (One note- there is a very slight delay when you add an additional amount of food before the calories "update" to the new total- so be sure to give it a second to register before removing your portion from the scale to get accurate counts.) In conclusion, I absolutely love this scale and can't recommend it enough to any one who wants an easy to use, very accurate, and even inspiring way to keep track of your diet.

Customer Review: Extremely Useful for Healthy Eating
Summary: 5 Stars

One of the greatest challenges in eating healthily involves really knowing what you are eating. This EatSmart scale does an awesome job. Just plunk the food item onto it - in whatever quantity you wish - enter its code and the numbers show up instantly!

The problem with most healthy eating projects is just how do you know what anything really is? Take "an apple". There are tons of types of apples, and they come in a variety of sizes. Is a green apple that is 3" around really exactly the same in carbs, fiber, etc. as a McIntosh apple that is 6" around? Did you know that many food values change DRASTICALLY if you eat that food raw vs cooked? The act of cooking the food sometimes enhances the nutrition - but sometimes it breaks down the fibers.

This scale is the answer. First, it's slim and clear. It takes up very little space on your kitchen counter, and fades into the background. When you need it, it's right there.

You plunk something onto it. Say you have a handful of seedless raisins and want to know how it's going to affect your blood sugar. Without the scale you'd have to make random guesses about how much you're eating and how big / small the raisins are and so on. No guesswork with the scale! You dump however many raisins you want to eat onto the scale. Type in their code - 064. POOF it gives you everything you want to know.

What does that include? The scale gives you:

calories
carbs
fiber
sodium
potassium
magnesium
total fat
saturated fat
cholesterol
calcium
protein
vitamin k

plus of course its weight :)

Not only is this superb for one item, but the scale has a built in memory. If you're making a meal, just keep putting the items onto the scale one after the other, adding each one into memory. When you're done with the meal, the scale will give you your full total.

There's a tare feature here, too. That means you can put a serving dish on first, and have the scale know how much that weighs. That way when you then put the "food item" into that serving dish, the scale will give you only the measurements of the food.

Highly recommended for anyone interested in having a more healthy diet!

Customer Review: Wonderful tool for eating healthy!
Summary: 5 Stars

I recently purchased the EatSmart Digital Nutrition Scale and am extremely happy with it. It is simple to use and doesn't take up too much space. I had been trying to lose a few pounds (about 7) for a couple of months now by counting calories, fat and carbs using a nutrition book and relying on food labels and was not having any success. This scale is way more accurate for measuring the nutritional value of foods. For instance my book would say 1 small banana was so and so many calories...well what exactly is considered a "small" banana? Another thing I noticed is my morning oatmeal says 1/3 cup dry equals 160 calories, but in actuality the true measurement in grams (40g) is actually less than 1/3 cup. This scale lets me know the true exact amount so I'm not over or under estimating. I buy individually flash frozen fish. On the bag it says one fillet is 90 calories....not so....when weighed according to the gram measurement on the bag my scale says the fillets range from 130 up to 150 calories! Now that is a significant difference! The more foods I weighed the more I found out to be inaccurate on the labels or according to my book. So all in all I am very excited to have this scale so that I will be eating exactly what I intend to eat and not some estimation based on general information. Perhaps that is why I didn't drop any weight...I was actually eating more calories than I thought (oh, and I had and still am working out 5 days a week vigorously - been doing that for many many years). I am anxious to see if now that I am using the EatSmart Scale if I will have more sucess with losing those stubborn pounds. As well as it being beneficial for calorie counting it is great for knowing other nutritional values like calcium which is very important for us women, as well as other valuable nutrients. I can see where it would be an invaluable tool for those who are diabetic and would highly recommend it for that purpose. So in closing, I would say it is well worth the price and I am very happy with my purchase!

Customer Review: A Wake up Call
Summary: 5 Stars

After many years of trying all kinds of micronutrient-specific diets without too much success (read low-fat first, low-carb later), I decided to simplify and start controlling my overall food intake.I bought a food journal where I record my daily intake. It became obvious that I need a good food scale to measure my portions. It is human to underestimate the amounts of food you consume and I had an inkling I was subconsciously "cheating".

I did read the reviews here and they were extremely helpful. I ordered, and the scale arrived very quickly. It even had the 4 AAA batteries included, which is rare when you buy any kind of electronics. It is cute and stays out on my counter. The glass top is easy to wipe down. It has all the features I need, such as measure nutritional value, the tare feature, the serv feature for measuring the value of prepackaged foods, etc. Can't say enough about the convenience of having the list of 999 foods pre-programmed in the scale. Easy to input, fast to see how many calories, fat, and many other other micro nutrients you are consuming.

Unlike some other customers who thought the display is hard to see, I see it perfectly. Also, please do not complain that the scale cannot measure the nutritional value of any and every food you put on it. It is a scale, not a magic scale. It cannot possibly know exactly how much of what you put in the food while you were cooking, you'll need a lab for that.

Having this scale has been a huge wake up call for me. As I suspected, I was eating much more than I thought I was. My serving was sometimes 2-3 times larger than the intended serving. I have seriously cut down on overeating and mainly thanks to the scale have lost about 6 lbs in the last month without being hungry. I am just choosing better foods and staying within my daily caloric limit.

I would highly recommend it as a prudent investment in your health. Do you pay a reasonable amount now, or do you pay later, many times over, at the doctor's office?

Customer Review: The New and Improved Eatsmart Scale
Summary: 5 Stars

I've been eying this item for about a year, but couldn't bring myself to spend the money for it. I recently received an Amazon gift card and decided to go for it. So far, I am really happy with this purchase. I'm actually kind of glad I ended up waiting to get it. The reviews that complain about the readability - no longer an issue! The scale takes up very little room on my counter, yet the platform is large enough to put a full size dinner plate on it. With the backlighting, I can still read it with a plate on it, although a hold feature would be useful (maybe it even has it, so sorry if it does - I'm still learning about as I begin to use it). It seems to be extremely sensitive. You can drop individual mushroom slices and it will continue to add them, unlike some scales. This scale definitely seems to have the most bang-for-your-buck and has high reviews just about everywhere on the web. If you're debating whether this scale is worth it, go for it; I really don't think you'll be disappointed. I'm following a low carb way of eating, and normally track my food with an online program. While that works great at home, I don't have Internet at our cabin in the boonies, so this will keep me on track when I can't look up food values on the Internet. We also have a variety of other special dietary needs in the family, so I have to cook to adapt for everyone's needs. This scale gives you all the information you need to make sure your meals are healthy and acceptable for everyone's needs (sodium, potassium, carbs, fiber, and more). Weighing is so much more accurate than saying a "medium whatever food," as shown in many food calculators.
