Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Donvier 837409W 1-Quart Ice Cream MakerCustomer Review: Homemade Ice Cream Fast Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this when I really wanted one of the big hand crank ice cream makers. Since, at the time, I could not find one, I bought this to tide me over. It is a great little machine. There is no ice & salt mess, the ice cream can be made indoors and it takes less than 30 minutes depending on the ice cream recipe you use. We like to surf the web for them or make up our own.
It's also nice that it is so small. One quart is enough for us for at least 2 desserts for everyone in the family. Also, I can let the kids try their recipes without worrying about being wasteful.
Using plain yogurt instead of milk makes good ice cream. Also, we've made various sorbets and soy desserts successfully.
It doesn't replace the nostalgic feel of the wooden hand churn ice cream makers, but we can use it much more often and it is a lot of fun.
Customer Review: Delicious and Fun Summary: 5 Stars
This ice cream maker is simple to use and makes delicious soft-serve style ice cream in about 30 minutes. You just need to store the mixing bowl in your freezer for at least 12 hours and whip up a base made from cream, milk, eggs and sugar, which takes about 5 minutes, and then add vanilla, M&M's, chocolate chips, etc...whatever you like. My kids have fun turning the handle every 3 to 4 minutes until the ice cream is done. It's that simple. I recommend buying the Ben and Jerry's Cookbook to go with this because it offers a no-cook base recipe as well as several creative recipe ideas.
This maker is a fun way to bring the family together to make a delicious treat. Clean-up is simple! I would definitely buy this maker again. Amazon offers free shipping on this one, so I don't believe there's a better deal out there.
Customer Review: Perfect for us Summary: 5 Stars
I received a 1 pint Donvier for Mother's Day. It's fabulous! Just the right amount for myself and my husband, but I now want the 1 quart size as well.
The canister lives in the freezer and is ever ready for our whim, company, or grandkids. Our freezer gets the canister so cold it can get difficult to stir - no problem! We just stir more often than every 2 minutes.
After years with a White Mountain hand crank that makes 1/2 gallon, requires ice and salt and muscles and endurance, this is a dream. It's almost TOO easy!
We are in a rural area with a small market and limited ice cream choices (Ice cream isn't quite the same after the hour drive from town in a cooler), but now we have our favorite flavors, gourmet quality, whenever we like.
Highly recommended.
Customer Review: Great Ice Cream Maker Summary: 5 Stars
The Donvier is a clever update to the older ice and salt type ice cream makers. The cold source is a sealed canister containing a material with thermal retention properties which is stored in your freezer cool it down. No fuss, no muss.
A variety of delicious frozen deserts can be easily made in 15 to 20 minutes. Starting with frozen fruit and/or cold ingredients makes it go faster. It is a snap to clean up.
One of our favorites is fresh or frozen fruit, buttermilk (about 2 cups each) and sugar to taste. We use pineapple, strawberries and raspberries a lot.
The only problem we have had is assembling the device for use. The plastic gasket that holds the canister in place can be hard to snap in.
Customer Review: My first icecream maker Summary: 5 Stars
This is my first icecream maker. I've read other people complain about these frozen canister types, but mine works great.
I have a freezer on top of the fridge with an autodefrost that's at 0-degrees. I just leave the canister in the back of the freezer all the time so it's ready for icecream.
When I make icecream, I always make 2 batches back to back without putting the canister back in the freezer, since mine seems to stay cold that long.
I think this type might work better than the electrics (although I've never used one) cause the icecream mix can cool longer in between rotations. I just turn 3 or 4 turns ever 2-4 minutes and am usually done with a batch in about 20 minutes.
I love it!
