Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Donvier 837409W 1-Quart Ice Cream Maker

Customer Review: A Perfect After Dinner Activity
Summary: 5 Stars

I love my Donvier! I got it as a gift a number of years ago and won't let it out of my kitchen. Just last night, I made an impromtu batch of ice cream for a guest, using some over-ripe strawberries in the refrigerator. But once we got started we also added a banana and some pecans, first blended in the blender. The end result was scrumptuous.

Ice Cream making can be SOOOO easy with this little gadget. My grandchildren love for me to get it out. What a tasty treat! Who doesn't love home-made ice cream, especially when you can see it being made, or better still, help make it.

Keep the inner core in your freezer and the lightweight plastic outer container in a bottom cabinet. No mess, no fuss, no problem.

If you like ice cream and want a simple way of making it, this Donvier is the answer. Buy one. No, buy two and give one away. If I had not gotten mine as a gift, I might never have known the pleasure.

Customer Review: First Time Ice Cream Maker
Summary: 5 Stars

We bought the Donvier along with the Ben & Jerry's recipe book. So far we've made 2 batches: Banana Walnut and Cookies 'n Cream. Both came out great, and its surprisingly easy.

The ice cream maker needs only a few cranks every couple minutes while the ice cream freezes. Its easy enough to use, clean, and store. So far we've been leaving the liner in the freezer so there's no waiting. The entire process is about 30 mins from start to finish. Glad I didn't buy an electric one.

The Ben & Jerry's ice cream book has a recipe for a no cook egg/sugar/cream base which is easy to make and tastes great. Haven't yet been concerned enough about the raw eggs to try a recipe that needs cooking (but I did go to the store to buy fresh eggs). So far the batches we made were only loosely based on recipes on the book - we mostly just threw in ingredients we had laying around the house. But the book gives enough background so one has an idea what will and won't work.

Customer Review: Donvier Ice Cream Maker
Summary: 5 Stars

Prior to this purchase, I own(ed) two other Donvier Ice Cream Maker. The ONE problem I had is the reason I purchased this 3rd one. The handle broke on both the other two and I couldn't find a way to replace them.
I have yet to make ice cream OR Sorbet with this machine that there are raves from all who enjoy it with us.
I did resolve the problem of the handle replacement when I checked the "instruction manual" that came with the new Donvier. I found first - that it is now sold/manufactured by the "Brown" company and they are out of Canada. Then I discoverd I could replace the handles and placed an order - only to find I had to pay for the order by contacting/calling the company first. Then it would be mailed in 3 weeks. YEAH! I now have 3 complete Donvier machines. I can have a party, don't you think?Donvier 837409W 1-Quart Ice Cream Maker

Customer Review: Great ice cream maker
Summary: 5 Stars

I work in the renewable energy field so I love being able to hand crank my ice cream (never mind all the electricity used to freeze the container - I'll solar power that some day). Donvier makes it a breeze to make ice cream and so fun to be able to choose your own flavors. I like handcranking and it only takes 20 minutes or so of pretty much inattentive cranking. I have not experienced problems of overfreezing resulting in a stuck paddle. I think the critical time that it could get stuck is the first few minutes so remember to crank consistently at the beginning. For a creamy consistency, let your ice cream base chill in the fridge overnight before churning. Clean up is easy. I either rinse right away with warm water (risking my skin getting stuck to the tub) or let it warm up and wash. Then I stick the tub back in the freezer for at least overnight. My favorite ice cream so far is Caramel Chocolate Pecan.

Customer Review: almost let bad review influence me ...

... and boy, am i glad i didn't! this is my first attempt at making ice cream and it seems fool-proof with this ice cream maker. i'm using it to make vegan ice cream too, and the results so far have been great.

all you have to do is follow the directions and turn the handle a few times, every few minutes. plenty of time to add extra ingredients without the problems one user has posted. maybe if you have some super-cold freezer, ice cream could stick to the sides very quickly but with our freezer on high, we haven't had any problems. the bucket is easy to clean, too. parts are very durable (i've already dropped the lid, and didn't crack it) ...

no ice, no salt, _quiet_, no electricity. no moving parts to break, nothing to wear out. don't think it's hard work, either. just a few cranks every couple of minutes. if you're thinking about buying this ice cream maker, go for it. i'm glad i did.
