Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Debbie Meyer Green BagsCustomer Review: Moisture problem solution Summary: 5 Stars
I have had the green bags for about 9 months. I have only used them for lettuce and they are wonderful. I find that Romaine lettuce lasts as long as 2 1/2 weeks when using these bags. I didn't detect any difference in taste and the lettuce stayed nice and crisp.
A Solution to the Moisture Problem:
As other posts have mentioned, there is a moisture build up in the bags when they are in the refrigerator. I tried wiping the bags when I found moisture. This was tedious. Next I tried wrapping the lettuce in paper towels. This worked fairly well, but I had to replace the paper towels after 2 or 3 days. This used a lot of paper towels. I finally tried wrapping the lettuce in thin cotton hand towels that I purchased at a Kragen Auto Supply store and this worked very well. The towels just get slightly damp and don't have to be constantly replaced. I just wrap the lettuce in a towel and put it in the bag. These hand towels (from Kragen Auto Supply) are meant for shop clean-up and are much thinner and smaller than a bathroom hand towel. They come in a package of 10 or a package of 20 the last time I purchased them. The cost was about $10 for a package of 20. They measure about 15 inches by 14 inches. It is likely that this type of shop clean-up towel is available at other auto supply stores. These are cheap, low quality cotton hand towels likely made in India or Pakistan. The towels also work well as a kitchen dish towel and to wipe up kitchen spills. After the towels have gone through the laundry 25 to 30 times, I use them for house cleaning purposes.
Customer Review: Use them properly and they work very well Summary: 5 Stars
Green bags work well if used properly. They don't work at all if you deviate from directions. You can't mix different produce in the same bag. You have to put them in dry and keep them dry. I have found that putting a paper towel in the bag helps. You need to press all the air out of the bag that you can without crushing the product. Things I have found they work well for include potatoes, tomatoes, peppers. For carrots, celery and onions I use the freshness eggs instead. I just toss one in the vegetable bin with them, and they do stay fresher longer. I did not find them overly helpful with bananas, but my mother in law uses them for bananas all the time. She puts green bananas in the bag and takes them out one at a time to ripen. I think the color change in the bags that someone else noted is a cue that the bags are losing their effectiveness. I know the Glad green bags I bought lost their green much faster than Debbie Myer bags, but they were more convenient and easy to use with the zipper. Only one size in them though.
I use green bags and vacuum seal bags both. Each work better for some products than the other. For example, berries seem to do better vacuum packed in a container than they do in green bags. If you use fresh produce alot, and on a daily basis, they really help save money. If you put produce in them and forget it for a week or two, especially produce with a high moisture content, they don't work so well.
Customer Review: I know some say they don't do anything, but they work in my kitchen! Summary: 5 Stars
I belong to a veggie co-op, and get veggies every two weeks. I never know what I'm going to get until a few days before, and so storage is important (while I figure out what to do with bok choy!). These bags work. I don't know how, I don't know what the gimmick is, or the science, but I can tell you that before I started using them, I threw out a bunch of veggies every two weeks (from the previous batch), and now, man, sometimes I can't even tell which ones are the new and which ones are the old.
I mean it - they work that well for me. Especially on greens. I have lettuce in the drawer in a green bag right now that I KNOW is over 2 weeks old, and it's still crisp and fresh. That never used to happen.
I wouldn't have believed it myself if I hadn't started using them. And I'm not sure how one reviewer found that even though they look good, they're rotton on the inside - that has NOT happened to me at all.
I mean, it - I have month-old carrots in there that I can't tell from the ones I got today. Still crunchy and still snap when you bend them.
And I DO reuse them, and have not seen any decline in their effectiveness, even after washing several times. The only time I chuck them is if, once in a while, something does eventually go bad in them. (Hey, it happens to the best of us.) I don't reuse those - I just throw them away.
I use these bags, and I'll never stop.
Customer Review: I LOVE LOVE LOVE these bags!! Summary: 5 Stars
I've had lettuce - Romaine, Baby Lettuces, Spring Mixes, whatever - last a month with these bags! You DO have to make sure that when you put produce in there that it is totally dry. Any moisture will affect how the bags work and grocery stores are notorious for spraying down the veggies with water mists all day so there's often water in the folds of lettuce. Be sure to pull the roots off and check for water. Once stored, if there is any condensation on the inside of your bag, you need to change the bag out. It means that the vegetable is putting out moisture. Just change bags and wash out the other bag to use later. Some veggies you should trim down also. Celery keeps very fresh for a very long time if you cut off the root. Romaine same thing. Green onion lasts for much much longer than in regular zipper bags, just make sure it's dry when it goes in. Carrots stay fresh. So do onions. Even cucumbers last MUCH longer. I LOVE these bags!! And I use them for everything EXCEPT I don't use them for much fruit at all - tomatoes or bananas or other "watery" fruit because of the moisture content in those. Bananas also give off a lot of gases too it seems which makes them ripen quick. Tomatoes are high in water and sugar. The bags work fantastic on most other "drier" types of produce though - I will never be without them!!
Customer Review: You have to follow the directions - or they won't work for you! Summary: 5 Stars
I like many others don't get why these bags are getting bad reviews. They have worked for me! I just cooked a 5 week old head of broccoli yesterday that tasted great!
Make sure to read the instructions, as you don't twist tie the bags shut, you fold the top of the bag over and place it against its side. This helps a little air to get into the bag.
I've tried these bags with all sorts of vegetables and fruits. I found that tomatoes lasted almost 4 weeks, same with Avocados. These bags definitely keep produce crisp and fresh! It's seriously like magic, I've been in heaven with these bags, being able to not feel so rushed to hurry hurry and eat it all up before they go bad. I can buy a little more produce - knowing they'll keep fresh better in the fridge. :)
I HIGHLY recommend purchasing these Green Bags as in my review - I have found them to be reliable. They're reusable and they do exactly as they claim they will: Keep vegetables and fruits fresher longer.
