Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Silpat Non-Stick Baking Mat, 11.6 x 16.5-inches, Half Sheet Size

Customer Review: Caught them on clearance for 5 Stars

I bought 8 of these on clearance at a local hardware store! I owned one, but needed more than one during holiday baking season. I now have 4, I gave 3 to my daughter and gave one as a gift. I dip a variety of things in chocolate during the holiday season (dried apricots, potato chips, oreo cookies). These are great to lay them on after dipping. Things don't stick and the clean up is very easy. I also love cookies with mini marshmallows baked in them, but they would stick to the pan. Not anymore! I slide the silpat off the cookie sheet to cool, then turn the sheet over, run cold water on it and load the next silpat mat onto the cookie sheet. It works like a charm. I can rotate 2 cookie sheets in and out of the oven to get more baking time in when I'm making so many recipes. This is a must have for any avid baker.

Customer Review: GREAT FOR PEELING GARLIC ALSO
Summary: 5 Stars

I hate peeling garlic, and I use lots of it when cooking. I usually crush the cloves with the side of a knife to get the peel off easily. But when I want the cloves to remain whole, I turn to the Silpat. It works like those tube shaped garlic peelers that go for $9, but better. The 16.5 inch width is 3x longer than those other garlic peelers, so it's possible to peel about 10 plump cloves at a time. Just roll the mat around the separated cloves, and roll firmly back and forth for a few seconds with the palms on top, moving both palms across the width of the mat. The skin sticks to the mat and the cloves come out naked without damage. This strength is also a minor weakness, as one can't just dump the skin into the trash; one has to rinse off the Silpat to easily release the skin.

Customer Review: My new favorite kitchen gadget
Summary: 5 Stars

Of all the gadgets I bought last year, this is by far my favorite. You can bake anything on this surface and it releases like magic. Meringue? Chocolate filling? Genoise? No problem. They also prevent scorched bottoms on delicate cookies.

I am astonished at how much these simplify life. I sometimes use them to roll out sticky piecrust and cookies, and again the dough releases easily. Of all the nonstick surfaces I've used over the years, Silpats are by far the easiest to clean. Most of the time, they rinse clean; when not, a few scrubs with a sponge and they're back to their usual slickness.

Great chefs have used Silpats to create complicated dishes like potato tuiles; I'm happy just using them to get my pastries out of the oven cleanly.

Customer Review: Would never be without one again!
Summary: 5 Stars

I've used a silpat for years and if anything happened to mine, I would go right out and buy another. After I got my first one, I loved it so much, I bought another so I would have two. I also purchased them for both of my brothers and my mother for Christmas. After they tried them, they also bought another. I can't imagine anyone not rating this a 5! I use it for everything! Cookies, etc just slide off. I put it under my pies to make clean up a breeze, baked chicken and other messey hard to clean foods are a thing of the past. It's definately one of my favorite modern inventions of all time! I've probably had mine five years or longer and it works as well now as the first time I used it. I also make chocolate covered pretzels and it works great for drying those too!

Customer Review: Worthy of the hype
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm an avid baker and have been eyeing one of these for years, but being a firm believer in the value of parchment paper, I never quite took the leap of courage to try a Silpat. Recently I needed to replace some old cookie sheets and while browsing here on Amazon, the site recommended the Silpat. After reading the reviews, I decided to order one mat to go with the 2 baking sheeets I was purchasing. I've just spent the weekend doing my holiday baking, and have ordered a second Silpat. I loved the way it worked! It fit my pan exactly, it did seem to help the cookies bake more evenly, and it cleaned up easily. No more cutting parchment paper to fit the pan, and given how much parchment I go through, this mat will pay for itself in this season alone.
