The stock filters are not very efficient. I've found that if you go to your pet store and get some activated charcoal, like the kind ya use for a fish tank filter, then cut a slit in the top of the pet mate filter, filling up with this charcoal...rinse it, then use in the pet mate filter, efficiency and longevity are greatly improved.Customer Review: It's a filter, what more can I say.

These work pretty well but are sensitive to maintenance. If you dont clean the fountain as often as you should, they get a little scummy looking and can be hard to clean. That's why they are replaceable though and my 2 feline friends really like the cool running water.Customer Review: Filters perform okay

The filters seem to do okay in the Petmate waterer however, they don't last that long and the cats love to tear them up. I have to replace the filter every 4 days or so with 3 cats. My cats like the waterer but they try to attack the filter through the ramp hole.Customer Review: Good fit.

My cat and dog love this fountain. The only problem I have found is that in all three fountains I have purchased, the on/off switch goes bad within about 6 months. The last one I bought, I didn't use the switch but just unplugged the cord from the wall when I needed to clean it. It still broke.
The fountain keeps water clean and cool. It has encouraged my cat to drink a lot more than he use to with just a bowl of water. I would recommend the fountain but keep in mind about the switches. You may need to replace them often like I do.
