Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Crock-Pot SCVP600-W Oval 6-Quart Smart-Pot Slow Cooker, WhiteCustomer Review: Not so good for the long run Summary: 2 Stars
I bought this just over a year ago and we've used it extensively. As long as you do soups and very moist meats (lots of liquids) it works fine. It is much too hot for most slow cooking and it will dry out foods on the warm setting.
Even with all of that, I got used to using it. However, the handle to the lid just broke off today and you must buy a whole new lid if you are out of warranty. That is $18.00!!! Rival says that this isn't a known issue and so maybe I'm the unlucky one. Also, when I called customer support, they were very unwilling to give me information about this problem. It seemed to me that they are aware of it, but don't want it publicized. When I asked the rep how long she had worked there, she replied that she couldn't give me that information because of "security concerns". I just wanted to know what level of experience she had!
If you are not going to leave it alone for very long or you only cook with lots of liquids, this may work out for you as it did for me for a year. If you want to have a long lasting more versatile slow cooker, you should probably look elsewhere. And after reading the reviews on most of the other Rival crockpots, I have decided that my initial feelings were justified and I will take Rival products out of my considerations.
Customer Review: World's HOTTEST crock-pot! Summary: 2 Stars
Neo & Wiggle, two neighbor dogs, worshiped me. This is because over the course of a couple days I fed them a whole pot roast, one which had been overcooked beyond edibility by this cooker - on LOW. This unit is NOT a slow cooker in any normal sense, and Rival knows it - they replaced our first one with no questions asked and didn't care what we did with the original cooker. This is because they'd rather keep replacing them than fix the defect, which is: The heating element runs at least TWICE AS HOT as any other slow cooker out there. [We're in our 50's and have dealt with many of these units]. So if you follow a crock recipe you are GUARANTEED an overcooked and probably ruined meal.
That is not to say that it's useless, far from it. All I have to do is remember these settings: HIGH(Rival)= HIGHEST,RAPID BOIL(not found on regular crock)....LOW(Rival)= HIGH(regular crock)....WARM(Rival)= LOW(regular crock). Now there's no timer for Warm, but that's OK as long as you're going to be able to take it out within 8-10 hours.
Customer Review: Very disappointed in the quality Summary: 2 Stars
Rival is the "original" slow cooker that has been around since at least the 70s. I bought this model a couple of months ago to replace an older model. I thought by purchasing the original "CrockPot" I would be getting the best slow cooker on the market. I am sorry to say the quality really seems to have gone down considerably compared to my model from ten years ago. After only a few uses the outside of the stoneware insert began crazing. Now the paint is almost completely crazed on the entire stone crock. The outside of this model also gets very hot, even on the warm setting. I am pleased with the way it cooks but will probably purchase a different brand next time due to the poor quality of Rival's product.
Customer Review: cooks too quickly Summary: 2 Stars
I love the way this crock pot looks, and I like the fact that it is programmable, but mine cooks way too quickly. I use crock pots often, and I own two others (Rival brand also). They cook exactly as they should but when I put food in this pot, the side on the back of this one will actually burn while the front side will cook to perfection. If you are at home, I guess the remedy would be to turn the lining crock around halfway during cook time, but if you need to be away, this one will burn your food. I have always been very happy w/ Rival products, but this particular one is a dud.
Customer Review: Fast Cooker Summary: 2 Stars
I wish I'd read the reviews more carefully when I bought this. It burns or overcooks everything I put in it.
I just ordered a Hamilton Beach to replace this Rival. The Hamilton Beach had almost all 5 star reviews.
Stay away from this one.
The last straw was last weekend when I used this Rival to make corned beef & cabbage. On LOW heat, the corned beef was so overcooked it fell into shreds. The potatoes, carrots and cabbage were cooked to mush and I added the vegetables much later in the cooking cycle.
