Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Crock-Pot SCVP600-SS 6-Quart Smart-Pot Programmable Slow Cooker, Stainless SteelCustomer Review: The Quart SIZE seems to matter Summary: 3 Stars
I've been reading tons of reviews all over amazon and elsewhere. In one place a reviewer wrote that the crock pot should always be at least half full. It seems that consistently the larger the quart size, the more problems there are with burning. I'm suspecting that the smaller ones do better because they are fuller. The crock pots that are 5.5+ in size generally tend to be 2-3 stars with complaints of burning and overcooking, while the smaller ones tend to get 4 stars and have much less complaints about being too hot. (There are 2 large crock pots with slightly better reviews.)
I do cook for larger groups on occasion and the potential for cooking larger amounts is appealing, but all the reviews are enough to convince me that a smaller one is going to give me better results for most of my cooking. So I'm going with something in the 4 qt. range. If you're worried about the "burn factor" as you're investigating what type to buy, just thought this observation may help.
In the end I didn't buy this crock pot, so I just put what the average rating was for the crock pot because it wasn't an option to leave the rating empty.
Customer Review: programmable timer Summary: 3 Stars
I have had this crock pot for several years, and until two weeks ago, loved it. Yes, I had burned some pulled pork, never thought that it was the crockpot's fault, had dried out some chili, again, thought it was me, had some food stick thinking they all do that. Two weeks ago the timer went haywire. True to form, I thought I did something wrong to accidentally turn it off. But today, after checking it five or six times thru the morning, and each time it had turned itself off, I am in the market for a replacement. I have read the reviews and was surprised to see all the complaints about "too hot" and "burning" and worse yet...the crock cracking! I have had several crockpots, including my original wedding shower gift in 1970 (ended up selling in a garage sale when I moved - should have NEVER done that) and never had issues with any of them. I wanted to "upgrade" to a larger better, hi tech appliance when I bought this cooker. Now I don't know which to buy???!!!
Customer Review: No problems Summary: 3 Stars
I haven't had any problems with burning. The reason I don't LOVE this crock pot is that the programming options are just too limited. You get High for 4 or 6 hours, and low for 8 or 10. What if I want to cook on low for six hours? Or even high for 5? You can't cycle through the settings to turn it to warm, the only way it will go is at the end of the cycle. Still have to pay attention to what time you turned it on, just in case. Also, it doesn't seem like the lid creates a very good seal, and isn't that a must with crock pots? It gets the job done and is probably worth the low price, but I am going to upgrade to the true programmable one.
Customer Review: Not really programmab;e Summary: 3 Stars
In a "programmable" product, you would expect to be able to have some variation other than the 4 speed/time selections provided. For example, I would like to be able to start a particular recipe on high for an hour, then switch to low for 4 hours, expecting then that the cooker would switch to Warm. However, to do that you would have to set the pot for 4 hours, then be there to turn it off after one hour, then set it for 6 hours on low, and be there to turn it off after 4 hours. Unless you cooked it the full time on either setting, it would NEVER go to Warm, and you can't manually Warm. I am very disappointed in this product.
Customer Review: The lid was a problem Summary: 3 Stars
I've actually had 2 of these and although I didn't experience my food burning like many others seems to have, I did have an issue with the lid. On both, the plastic handle broke and there's no way to fix it. I have to put a towel or something over the hold where the handle used to be in order to keep the heat inside the slow cooker.
