The picture on this page is misleading ... it is the DTQ450 reviewed by Cooks. The thermometer has a small red tip on a slightly narrowed shaft.
I ordered this instant read thermometer because of the terrific review by Cooks and have never regreted it.
I have had it for about 3 weeks now and have used it on chickens, beef steak and bread on many occassions. The LCD readout is large and easy to read. It reads quickly (4 or 5 seconds)and produces reliable results and the on off button is a nice touch. By the way the red tip is not a protective tip cover to be removed leave it alone!
If you are in the market for an instant read thermometer do yourself a favour and buy this one.

I've previously used a cheap analog thermometer or timed and guessed at when my meats would be done on the grill. Buying and using the ProAccurate thermometer has been a transformative experience in the way I grill meats. With this fast, accurate thermometer, I now reliably get the medium rare steaks cooked medium rare, the medium steaks cooked medium, and my chicken and pork safely cooked but not overdone. Nice egg shape design keeps it from rolling off. My one wish would be that the stem of the thermometer were about 6 inches longer -- I sometimes feel like I'm burning my fingers when I get close to the grill to check temperature (that's why proper grill utensils are big, right?).Customer Review: Lots of nice features

First of all, the numbers are very big; about twice the size of another thermometer I had. There are a lot of nice features with this thermometer. The automatic off feature will certainly save a lot of batteries and regrets. The sleeve has an open tip on it to allow it to measure ambient temperature. A calibration button allows you to ensure it is set correctly. A hold button will let you retained the reading until you can get the thermometer to where you can read it. The package says it's waterproof, I don't plan on testing though! It is rated for commercial use so it is very durable. Changing the battery is through a large screw on cap so that should be easy to do.Customer Review: Finally a reliable thermometer

I worked in a restaurant kitchen for over four years while going to school. When I left the job, I left with newly acquired love and passion for cooking ....... unfortunately the professional grade equipment couldn't come with me. I've gone through atleast 5 thermometers in the past couple of years, all of which I purchased at large retail chains for $10-$15. None of them even compare to this CDN model.
It is fast - I would say about 2-3 second average.
It is sturdy and well built.
It is water proof - huge plus for cleaning and dropping off in sink.
Best one I've ever owned.
Customer Review: Should Have Bought It Sooner!

This is my first digital thermometer. I wish I'd bought it earlier. It takes so much uncertainty out of trying to read the old non-digital types.
It's improved my cooking since I have a fear of not cooking meat long enough. I had a delicious boneless chicken breast tonight because I checked the temp before the recommended time was up. If I'd cooked it as long as I was supposed to it would have been dry.
I look forward to enjoying my food more since it will be so easy to tell if it's been cooked to a safe temperature.
