Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of ProAccurate ThermometerCustomer Review: Sooo much better than dials Summary: 5 Stars
I see some people talking about the Thermopen and that's good, but America's Test Kitchen recently changed their recommendation to this model I think, so I decided to give it a try. I'm not disappointed at all.
I used to use "instant read" dial thermos, which have two problems. First of all they're very slow, 10-30 seconds. Second of all, they use a very long sensor, which is in the first 1-2 inches of the probe. That makes it tricky to know if you have the probe in far enough on big cuts, and tricky to get into small cuts at all.
By contrast, the CDN digital thermometer is very fast, only a couple seconds before the reading levels off. It seems accurate although I don't think I've put this one in boiling water yet.
The probe is great, it's the type that only needs the bottom centimeter or so stuck in, which makes it easier to be in the center of a cutlet or something other than a 1-1/2" thick steak. It's great for those too though. :-)
This will continue to be my trusted tool of choice for a long time to come, and in the case that it breaks, it's cheap enough that I won't be too terribly sad.
Customer Review: Accurate, easy to read and can be calibrated Summary: 5 Stars
This little digital thermometer has a lot going for it. It's inexpensive, fairly quick, easy to read and easy to use. Best of all, it's accurate and can be calibrated. Few digital thermometers are this simple to calibrate - there's a button right on the face of it for that very purpose. After having a roast almost ruined by an inaccurate thermometer, accuracy and the ability to recalibrate (in case of accidental drops, for instance) are a must for me.
The ProAccurate has a thinner tip at the end than most of its kind, leaving behind a much smaller "hole" when inserted and removed. The only drawback, if any, is its speed. Although it's not particularly slow, I wouldn't call this an instant read as a slight bit of waiting is necessary. I can be impatient and even I don't consider this a deal breaker. I would love to upgrade to a true instant read Thermapen, but they're pricey. Until then, this one is a very good choice and an excellent little thermometer for a great price.
Customer Review: Working great Summary: 5 Stars
Technical notes -- the package for mine says it goes from -40 to 450F, and does not mention if the product is dishwasher-safe. I have always hand-washed mine. The thermometer has a 5 year warranty.
I've had this thermometer for several months and am quite pleased. I calibrated it when I opened the package [per the instructions], and have had very good results with my meats. I love that the sensor is in the tip; most instant-read thermometers want you to insert the probe an inch or more!
There is a "hold" button on the head, so the thermometer will retain the temperature for you to view in better light.
I've used it for chicken, pork, and steak. I haven't tried it yet with fish, but with the sensitive tip, I'm betting it will work great. I'm really hoping this thermometer is a helper in my kitchen for years to come!
Customer Review: Great thermomether Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this to replace some inaccurate and slower analog thermometers I had. I tested it upon receipt and it read 31.6 at freezing and 211.2 at boiling. I thought this was pretty accurate for a a quick read thermometer that was as inexpensive as it was.
I have been using it for a couple months now and think it is great. The only improvement I would make on it would be to make the stem a couple inches longer. This probably would not be an issue for most people, but I use it to measure mash temperature when making beer and wish it could easily get deeper in the mash.
I would highly recommend this thermometer to anyone looking for an accurate (with the ability to calibrate) thermometer at a good cost.
Customer Review: works great, looks great Summary: 5 Stars
This is the model that was named a 'best buy' by Cooks Illustrated. Overall it was rated second to the $80 Thermapen, which uses a superior technology. Nonetheless, I found this does everything well and has no faults. I bought this for when I cook at my Mother's house. I have the Thermapen too, which is faster and has a greater temperature range, but the CDN does everything its supposed to, at a $60 savings.
I found it to be fast, easily readable (extra large letters, good contrast) and reliable. I liked that it turns itself off, since some other models don't and just run down the battery. It also allows you to re-calibrate itself in freezing water, so you can be sure it stays accurate.
