Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Chef's Choice 838 Waffle Cone Express Ice Cream Cone Maker

Customer Review: Foolproof and delicious!
Summary: 5 Stars

Three words: Best Gift Ever.

If you've ever wondered what to do with the leftover egg whites after making custard style ice cream, this is your answer.

It is very easy to use. Put 3 tablespoons of batter in the center of the iron, close the lid for 95 seconds, open the lid, use a small plastic spatula to peel off the cone, roll the cone using the included cone form, wait a few minutes for it to cool and hold its shape, then EAT!

The instruction manual calls for 3 tablespoons of batter. Rather than using a ladle or spoon and guesstimating, I suggest a 3 tablespoon cookie scoop, like this Oxo model:

Oxo Good Grips Large Cookie Scoop

If you place the dough into the center of the iron using this scoop, it is impossible to make a mess. I made 10 cones without any batter running out the sides or bottom of the machine. In fact, it's so clean, there is no evidence of it being used. After waiting for it to cool, I wipe it with a damp cloth and put it away.

Very, very simple.

Highly recommended.

Customer Review: A GREAT gift!
Summary: 5 Stars

I got this with an ice cream maker for my 8 year old daughter for Christmas this year. It was a huge hit! The recipe is simple, (a few basic ingredients you normally have on hand anyway,) delicious, and the guests loved it. She needed help to form the cones, and one trick is to put a small marshmallow in the bottom, as we haven't perfected the bottom of the cone yet. It takes about 2 minutes to cook a cone. You can also make cute little bowls that you can use for other desserts and foods besides ice cream. I've already bought a few more for gifts. Be sure to oil the grid or it's a bit of time to clean it out. I'm not sure how harsh a brush could be used on a nonstick surface so we just used a cloth. A basic recipe makes 5-7 cones, perfect for after dinner. All in all, highly recommended to make any day or occasion extra special.

Customer Review: Not only Ice Cream

There's another great way to enjoy this waffles - fill them with homemade caramel filling. Very simple - boil 1 can of sweetened condenced milk (without opening it) on the lowest heat for about 3 hours, the lid on the pot should be closed and you have to be sure, that water covers the can all the time. After 3 hours put the pot with the can under the cold running water for about 10-15 min. When you finally open the can, you'll find inside the most delicious caramel you've ever had in your life. Let it cool in the frige and beat in 1 stick of unsalted butter. Bake waffles, make canolis and fill them with your caramel. You can add walnuts, peanuts, almonds - everyting that you can think of.

This product is easy to use right out of the box. I got this a couple of days ago and have used it twice. The recipe booklet includes 3 recipes that are easy to follow. I have tried two of the recipes to rave results from my family. You can have fresh ice cream cones any time and they taste better than the supermarket cones in the box. These cones are a little smaller than the fresh waffle cones sold in the ice cream shops. The only thing you need to remember to do is to grease it well and often even though the waffle baker is non-stick some batter does get stuck in the grid of the waffle baker.

Customer Review: Fun and Easy to Use
Summary: 5 Stars

The Chef Choice Waffle Cone Maker is so easy to use from the very first cone. If you read the instructions, making the cones will be easy. The most difficult part is handling the waffle to form the cone when it is hot, but it only takes a few seconds and the slight discomfort is well worth it. We have taken the cones and ice cream to several picnics to share with others and everyone loves the waffle cones. We are having so much fun making cones and homemade ice cream to go in them! I would highly recommend this product if you are interested in making your own waffle cones!
