Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Chef's Choice 677 Cordless Electric 1-3/4-Quart Teakettle

Customer Review: SUPER PRODUCT.
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought one of these about 3 years ago and just love it. It's been durable and a delight to use. I'm 65 years old and just hate things with tiny hard to see switches and made of cheap plastic. This pot has a big, easy to use off/on switch that lights up when it's on so there is no doubt if I got it turned on or not. The automatic turn off feature is great too as I don't have to remember to turn it off. I noticed one reviewer made some disparaging comments about this model that I don't think are fair to the product. If he/she had read the features enumerated on the box, and the Owner's Manual, they would have seen that it's made of stainless steel, not plastic, so yes, the sides will get hot as a metal sauce pan on the stove will, but being stainless steel, it will last forever. Also the other reviewer mentioned the opening was too small to put eggs inside to boil them. Duh! It's not a sauce pan! The manual specifically says it's designed to boil water only and not to put soup or anything else inside. Anyway, it's been very durable for the last 3 years with no problems and I think it's just great.

Customer Review: I can't live without it!

I love my Chef's Choice electric kettle! I've been wanting an electric kettle for the longest time, but I wasn't sure which one I wanted. There are a couple of things that made me want this one. First of all, it's metal....at least the important parts are. And yes, it does get hot- duh, so don't touch that part! It's better than it being made of plastic and letting all of those nasty chemicals in your water every time you want a nice cup of tea or hot chocolate. It's got a nice heavy duty plastic handle so you don't have to worry about getting burned. The heating element is concealed, which is super great. I had a cheapy electric kettle that had exposed heating element. Yuck! It got super gross with all of the build up, which made it hard to clean. I am also very amazed at how fast this kettle boils water! And the automatic shut off is definitely a plus of course. And the price was great! I did get mine at Wal-Mart only because I took too long making a decision and didn't want to wait for it to be shipped. :) Anyways, I am super happy with my purchase! I use it all of the time!

Customer Review: Hot Water in A Flash...
Summary: 5 Stars

I have gone through many coffee makers and none of them have met my expectations, that is until I finally broke down and purchased an electric kettel. I just moved from a home that was all gas. I was used to quick cooking and found in the new home this was not occuricng on my electric stove. I like to make teas and instant oatmeal quite often. I found the kettle on the stove took too long and heated the kitchen up, not too nice in the summer in Texas!

The kettle has many great points:
This kettle and base is truly cool to the touch.
The heating time is super quick and no more hot kitchen.
Easy to clean (unlike my coffee maker)
Corded base was easy enough to hide in the kitchen (unlike the coffee maker)
Large pouring spout, though be careful if pouring into a small cup it could splash you with hot water-in another words Always be careful when pouring something hot!
Only drawback: silver sides very hot to touch-so don't!

I also bought another for work. My co workers love it! We always have tea, instant soup and oatmeal now.

Customer Review: Hot water in a hurry
Summary: 5 Stars

I've owned a Cuisinart, a de Longhi and now the Chef's Choice electric kettles. The first one died on its own (quite prematurely, to my way of thinking), my wife inadvertently destroyed the second one (which was a fine machine) and we got the Chef's Choice to replace that. It works great! It's WAAAY quieter than either of the other kettles we've had, which rumbled to a boil with enough noise (deciboils...?) to awaken both us and our neighbors (or it surely seemed that way early in the morning). Our current model boils up a full load of very cold water in about 7 minutes, a bit faster than the other units also. It's considerably cheaper than the other kettles we've had (you could almost buy two Chef's Choices for one of the others) and it works really well. My only quibble is the other kettles would shut themselves off much quicker than the Chef's Choice once they reached boiling. The Chef's Choice will go for another 30 - 45 seconds if given the chance, but this is not a problem if you're boiling more than a cup of water. My recommendation: Buy one!

Customer Review: A better way to boil water
Summary: 5 Stars

I had a good scare when the house smoke alarm was set off by a kettle that had boiled dry, and decided "there has to be a better way". This product shuts itself off when the water has reached a rolling boil. Although the steel body will be hot to the touch, it has a large well-insulated handle, bottom, and lid. It is designed to pour without dripping and your hand is not exposed to escaping steam in the process. It is made of stainless steel, so it is sturdy and does not impart any plastic taste to the water.
It requires an outlet that will accept a 3-prong plug. The auto-off feature means less steam is produced than a traditional kettle, but you might want to avoid placing it directly under wooden cabinets. It is also possible to turn it off manually before a full boil is reached if you want hot water for French press coffee, for example.
Compared to a stove-top kettle this product is quicker, quieter, more energy-efficient, and safer. If it prevents even one accident or fire, it is worth considerably more than its purchase price.
