Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Chef's Choice 677 Cordless Electric 1-3/4-Quart TeakettleCustomer Review: This one's my favorite. Summary: 5 Stars
After living in Europe, where everyone has one (like we have toasters) I have owned a few. This was the last one I bought in Europe and it outlasted all the others. It is amazingly good looking. It saves time and energy. I have the most hands on kids on the planet and have never had a problem. Yes it gets hot...it boils water. It's like a kettle, the kids don't touch it. I think it's good that it radiates heat like it does. A plastic one a kid (or anyone else for that matter) could pick up because it didn't seem too hot and actually burn themselves with boiling water which is what you don't want. I've had plastic ones and they don't seem to last. It is very stable (won't tip over) and it doesn't take up a burner on the stove. A must for tea drinkers and about the same price as a decent kettle. Less cleaning because it doesn't sit on your stove and get grease splatters and the separate heating element means calcium accumulation isn't a problem. And it turns itself off! No more running for the whistle! Or waking people up! Or melting down your kettle! I bought this again when I moved back from Europe and am as happy with the 120V version as I was with the 240V.
Customer Review: it works perfectly, durably, perpetually Summary: 5 Stars
This is one of the things my wife and I agree on . . . If it ever dies, we'll order a new one immediately. We've had it so long, I couldn't say since when - maybe 7-8 years. We use it about 4-6 times a day. It's efficient and effortless.
Like any tea kettle, it needs to be de-limed occasionally; we use dilute, generic vinegar, every few weeks. I once was a bit too vigorous in cleaning the filter spout, a fragile nylon screen that helps to trap mineral deposits. After looking in vain on the Web for tea kettle repair parts, I resorted to calling Chef's Choice customer service for a replacement.
They immediately answered the phone! They politely said they'd send me one immediately! No charge!
Hardly worth mentioning, but in the interest of full disclosure: after our many years of daily use, every once in a great while, maybe every couple of months, the pot seems reluctant to heat. We lift the pot and set it down again to initiate the cheerful sound of water beginning to heat. The stub connects the kettle electrically to the base, and this simple maneuver corrects a (rarely) poor connection to the base.
Customer Review: Massively convenient, a real time (and maybe life-) saver. Summary: 5 Stars
My wife loves a good cup of tea and in the past, we just left the kettle on very low heat on the stove. The other night I came home to the smell of gas. The breeze had blown out the flame and my wife, who had a really bad cold, was upstairs and could not smell the gas.
Time to get something a bit safer while we still had a house! After some research, we ordered this electric kettle (to the joy of my wife's British friends who think we are barbarians for not having one.)
I was astounded at how fast this thing heats water, maybe 5 minutes for a mostly full pot from tap-cold to full rolling boil.
The automatic shut-off works perfectly (and has a small light so youneed not guess if it is off or on) and we no longer need to worry about errant gas fumes and whistling kettles.
The kettle is well-made, attractive and seems to be sturdy and definitely works a treat. Get one and you won't be dissappointed. Needs a three-prong outlet, so make sure you can use it first. Sides do get hot but the handle stays properly cool and the safety lid works very nicely with no drops or leaks that I have seen.
Customer Review: Very good, lasted a year so far Summary: 5 Stars
We are extremely pleased with this kettle. For over a year now, it has faithfully boiled water quickly and easily. Our last kettle was the Braun version and that one began to leak after six months and this was our replacement. I just bought this one again as a gift for my mother.
Pros:
1. 1 year + without any problems
2. super easy to clean
3. no need to replace filter--just pop it out and clean it
4. cordless and automatic shut-off
5. quick
6. does not spill when you pour
Cons:
1. automatic shut-off does not work if the lid is up (i've forgotten to close it a few times)
2. the outside does get hot but neither of us have ever scalded ourselves
3. some discoloration on the base but not an issue
4. hard to read level but after a few uses you can estimate how high to fill it
Our usage: every morning we drink four cups of tea, followed by afternoon tea, and tea for the evening (yes we are tea addicts!); also I use this to boil water for pasta and to make stock because it is much faster than the stove
Highly recommended.
Customer Review: Very, Very Pleased Summary: 5 Stars
This was and still is my first electric kettle.
I really read many reviews on all of the electric kettles I was contemplating here on Amazon, and the price and the reviews of this one bought me over.
It's a simple kettle ( no flashy anything, but gorgeous in design). It is also surprisingly very quiet and very, very fast! (boils 1 Liter of water in less than 5 minutes). I was tired of 'microwaving' water at work ( where its always below freezing in the office) and as a big instant tea drinker, I needed to always have a hot cup of tea always with me.
I love that it has a safety switch/timer, where it shuts off after water has reached bowling point (whether you are next to it or not); and because it the kettle itself is cordless, I don't ever have to worry about getting the electrical cord tangled or wet in the sink when I am trying to refill kettle.
The only downfall I can see is that the cover does not open all the way back, so its a little difficult to get water in the kettle. But besides that, I have been enjoying this little sucker for over a month now and I am glad I purchased it!
